Heat riser question
 

I was under my car yesterday, and noticed that the thermostatic spring is missing from the pass side stock log manifold. My valve is very free to rotate, and just goes to a constant position (engine off) based on "gravity". Anyone know if this "default" position is either open or closed? I had the car out tonight for a few minutes, and just checking exhaust flow "by hand" it seemed like pressure from both exhausts (duals) was about the same. Thx for any feedbck / comments.

I would try to move it with the engine running and feel for resistance due to the exhaust flow.

The best move would be to remove it all together along with blocking the intake heat and removing the choke from the carb...

Since the spring is gone, you want it in the open postion. May want to wire it open. Without the spring it will take longer to warm up in the winter. Seeing your state, I would keep the choke unless it is a summer only car.
