my friend bought a 71 ta from the original owner this past year and i had it on the hoist at work to get a bunch of pics from all angles. its a white with black int. auto a/c car. around 50k miles original paint, intertior, engine compartment! thought these pics might help with your resto's. if there is any interest, i have a lot more

I see painted (body color) gas tank straps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brewster, I noticed the same thing! I think there was some discussion a few months ago noting that Norwood production photos showed a car at the primer dip tank and the straps were clearly visible. I think I am still gonna leave mine black...

My 71 will be going into the paint booth in the next month or so. Any pictures you can post or email would be greatly appreciated.

engine has original paint. The vacuum hoses, belts , plugs and wires replaced at a local shop shortly before my friend got it along with original spiral shocks. they messed around with the shaker trying to get it working too. they did not save original parts. otherwise this is the most original pontiac engine compartment ive seen in person! only lets me do 5 pics at a time..ill send engine compartment pics up tomorrow

Van Nuys or Norwood built? How far into production is this one?

the gas line clips.....that is interesting... never seen the tower used on the gas lines... the yellow and pea green dabs on the spindle is the same i have also seen on 70's .i have 6 sets of spindles here and all have that.(pass. side also had a peach colored dab,at least on 1/2 of the spindles i have here did) the pea green was used all over the front suspension/steering linkage..
i am curious if the3/4"{ heater hose is the branded EPDM or the stenciled EPDM.. 70's seem to have had the stenciled/stamped EPDM and the 71 I have still had its origional 20th day 1971 dated 3/4" hose and it was branded with white ink in the branded script..
and the gas tank straps. we know they had body colored in 73, i thought 70 and 71 were black.. is this a late 71 car and could 72 be the year they changed to the painted straps with this being a later 71??as an example... I know the 72 A/C cars started using the pressure switch and 71 did not, but some late 71 cars started getting it(My 7/71 did)... let us know the build date if possible... thanks for the pictures....

i had build date wrote down but cant find it. get that for you tomorrow. norwood car. more chassis pics. i spent a couple hours with a gasket scraper razer blade findin all this neat stuff. still a lot more to find! ill post engine pics after the rest of the chassis. fist time ive ever seen the small towers also. i would like to see other peoples pics of details like this if you got them out there. im a resto geek and i like to learn all i can about this. The exhaust has the original front pipes but back half appears to be replaced. everywhere you look at a seam, you see red oxide primer showing through. notice the pic by the body drain plug in last posting! another note..ive looked at 4 low mileage chassis cars recently between me and my friends cars and they all say cheverolet on the original subframe bushings.

ric i dont think those are chalk marks. some stuff i wont be able to verify till spring when it comes back out of storage. by the way this car was at the pure stocks, no tune up a/c 3.08 gear knockin cobwebs out the pipes running 14.3 97 mph. year before last. best run.

I agree with you on those bushings having "chevrolet" embossed on the side.I have 3 NOS sets(granted NOS is really SR) and they are all embossed with the same chevrolet PM script.

Does anyone do a reproduction the trunk drop drain plug in Kooter's picture (see below)? If not would anyone like to try??..........calling Mr. Norwood.............?

I've never seen a car that didn't use tower clamps on the EVAP lines that go to the standpipe. My '71 and '73 both have them and I've seen tons of other early 70's GM cars in the salvage yards that use them for the EVAP system. The gas lines use spring clamps which are visible in the picture.

Kooter, do you have a picture of the front valance panel? Is it painted black on the bottom?

99 % have had the gas tank messed with so i usually see worm clamps or none at all. i dont have good close up of valance. ill check when i see the car again. i found chalk marks on front of subframe. the original black paint on the subframe is very weak/thin and mostly gone. same on the gas tank straps... looks like they may have been black.

started this post to help but also would be nice to see other pics from you guys out there. especially any van n. cars. ive got a 71 formula built in cali. sold in texas that im doing body and subframe now.

Wow! That's alotta overspray on the underside of the hood. Is that typical from what others have seen??

Kooter, I have a few disassembly pics of my 71 V.N. TA. Unfortunately I didn't get a lot of details because there was so much dirt, undercoating, and surface rust. Most of the details I have ironed out are based on asking questions and on pics of other original cars (like these). If there is something specific you have a question about, I can try to help.

The front lower metal valance's were black EDP coated and the only part that recieved paint would be the front part above the lower spoiler, so yes your bottom(as well as the inside) of the lower valance would retain the EDP coating, being black.
And as far as towers go..I have never seen one and bought and disassembled 6 1970-71 base firebirds,espirits,and 1 formula 350 to get information from untouched cars. Not one had towers on the rear. But, if you look in the assembly manual, it clearly shows the round clips being used in 1970(NV or EES cars). The 1971 manual shows 8/13/70 that the green clips part number was removed and the tower clamps part number was substituted ..so I guess they changed to the tower for the emissions routing for better sealing. But I had never seen one on any of the cars I disassembled 2 years ago.. Then again, only 2 were 71's ...and kooter is right, the tanks had been replaced at some time on both which is so common...

I'll second Dens71 comments on the evap line/clamp situation. The evap/vent hoses at the tank always used these small stainless "tower" clamps. But usually the same hoses at the bodies line connections used no clamps, as in Kooters pic #ta143.
I'm with you 68bird400HO. That is an extreme amount of White under the hood. Almost looks like there's more White than Black. Could be a line painter who was doing his best to make sure the hoods' edges got enough spray, or perhaps the hood has been touched up since day one by a careless body shop guy. Would be cool to see this one in person.
Kooter, do you recall if the front exhaust pipes, in the trans & crossmember areas, had the flattened sections on them? IE., if cut as a cross section, would they be more 'D' shaped than oval?

I will third Dens71 tower clamp comment. I dropped two original tank out of two 71 V.N. cars and they both had these tiny tower clamps on the lines going into the tank only.

TAric, I did have the original exhaust pipes on my 71 TA and they did have that flattened area you are referring to.
