To keep or not to keep 350 rebuit engine?
 

Greetings,
Im getting a 400 built this week for my 1968 vert clone. What's in there now is the original 350 block with 400 parts (not sure which ones).

Since its not a true GTO, would it be worth it to keep my matching block for resale value down the line or just get the core charge for it as it would need to be redone anyway?

Obviously, this would not be a question if it was a True gto matching numbers.

Im leaning towards not keeping it as i have no room for it.

All Pontiac parts between 326-350-400 are interchangeable except for block itself, pistons. Thats it.
So you could either sell it complete, or take off all the interchangeable parts and scrap or sell what you don't want.

My opinion would be to keep the block. Matching numbers is matching numbers and you can never get that back. If you've got the space to store it... then why not? Who knows where the market will go and what a matching numbers Lemans/Tempest/Custom S will bring? With everyone cloning them out with 400's... a matching numbers original block would set it apart from the rest. Either way enjoy the car and good luck.

Nobody cares about a matching #'s lemans, unless it had some rare pedigree or options (convert, HO engine, etc).

I'd say keep it if you can. As once it's gone you'll never get it back. I have a 68 Lemans conv without the right motor, and I wish I had the original motor. If nothing else oil it down, wrap it up and set it out of sight. just my 2 cents

WOW... to say that "Nobody cares" definitely comes across condescending and a bit insulting... especially to those of us that actually do care and may have pride in our matching numbers cars. To have a car the way it rolled out of the factory with all the correct sheet metal and motor adds something to it... and it's not always about the money.

It's extremely difficult to keep a car matching numbers over four decades and it's extremely easy to stuff any 400 you find under there. If given the option to buy a Lemans with the matching numbers 350 or some random 400... I'd go matching numbers all the way. I may be in the minority but I know I'm not alone.

Throw the bare block in the basement or under a workbench once it gets buried it will never be in your way. If it is a good runner then I would keep it together until your current combo it up and running 100%. Its always nice to know you have a good spare long/short block standing by.

Your opinion may be true to a point but I wouldn't separate them for scrap metal prices.

If you need the money or don't have any room for it, then sell it.

If not, keep it.
I sold the complete 326 from my LeMans, once the 455 was done.

interseting if you so a search for pontiac lemans vs pontiac gto, it would appear that the lemans is becoming rarer than the gto. Funny hoe 5-10 years changes values on lots of things, wish i still had some of the "common" vehicles i scrapped, they are now worth money! maybe people will care down the line! i am in the same predicament with a 68 lemans but will keep the number matching engine in the corner.

Hello,Here is my two cents also. Keep that 350ci and like the other Py member said oil that baby down and wrap it! You don't want to get rid of something that belongs to that car and then regret later!! That motor is always good to have around and when and if you ever go to sell your car guess what? You offer it with the car to the next person! It could only show that you truely cared about your Poncho!! Unless you need a few bucks back real bad. good luck on your decision! Either way it's your call. Enjoy your ride!
