Moving an air compressor
 

Can an oil filled air compressor be transported on it's side? I want to move an 80 gallon air compressor with a 5 Hp motor with an oil filled pump on it's side and want to know if this is an issue.

I think you should drain the oil. You don't want it getting past the rings and filling the cylinder.

Why not just remove compressor from the tank?
Most have 4 bolts and one hard line.

i would just drain it when i bought mine it was pre-filled and we transported it on its side and it leaked some. when i move again im just going to drain it..its not even 4 bolts it 1 ! plus do you change your oil at the correct intervals ? most people don't so now would be a great time to change it and check your air filter right away just a little thing that usually goes forgotten but still important.

I just bought a 60gal two stage recently and brought it home from the store laying down. I let it stand for a week before I fired it up. You just need to make sure there's no oil in the cylinder, or it will hydraulic and blow it's top.

I would either take the pump off or keep it upright, especially if you will be painting right away. You don't want oil in your hoses even if you are using water and oil traps. Also like others have said, you could hydro lock the cylinder and bend a connecting rod.

I've transported mine twice with oil in it. it was changed when i set it back up. Hindsite I should have just drained it before loading. It takes more than 3 people to load it. ASK me why i bought a 100 dollar new flywheel for mine.

I think I will drain the oil out and refill when I get it home. It's an almost brand new compressor I'm buying off someone.

When I bought mine new I layed it down with oil in it. Of course the store guy says I ruined the warranty by laying it down cause he was standing there. YaYa I thought, I'd just bring it back when he wasn't around if I had to. But I set it up let it drain for a day while I got it plumped up and it worked fine. Did leak a little oil out of the oil air vent, I forgot to seal that off.
Hey if that much oil could seep past the rings to ruin it those rings must not seal too good to begin with!
