1/2" Sending Unit 74-81 F-body
 

We have just finished assembling the first RobbMc 1/2" sending unit for 1974 to 1981 F-body cars (Firebird and Camaro). This application is more difficult to build than the others we have done because there is a big hump in the middle of the tank and the lines must be bent around the hump yet stay close enough to the hump so as not to interfere with the trunk floor. We bought a used tank so we could test fit each one before we ship it. However, we would still like some feedback from someone who can test fit it in a car before we go into production.

As a reference, here is the one we make for the 1967-69 F-body cars:

If you would like to have one of these, and are willing to install it right away and give us some feedback, we will sell the first one for half price ($90, or $100 with -8AN fittings). If for any reason it won't fit or you don't like it, you can send it back and we will modify it or refund the purchase price as long as you tell us why it didn't work for you.

Email me at [email protected] if you are interested and will be willing to install it within a week of receiving it. If possible, we would prefer someone who can take photos of it mounted in the tank and in the car.

Robb, thank you for getting these done for our 74-81 F-Bodys, i didn't think we were going to get one for these cars.

At this time i can't help you out with the test fit but i will tell you that i want (2) of them when you put them into production.

I'll be checking the board to see when you start selling these, also i still will be needing your big fuel pump.

You're welcome Robert. I wasn't sure if we were going to ever make these either. They are a bit of a pain to make and required several bending fixtures. However, we received numerous requests and we felt that modifying a stock unit for this application was outside the realm of most do-it-yourselfers so we are hoping it will be a good seller. At this point we know it fits the tank, we just want to make sure it clears the trunk floor when the tank is installed in the car.

I'd also like to say thanks for doing this for us Rob. Things are going way too slow for me to commit to one in the near future, but if it goes into production I will be in for one when I can.

I got tired of waiting on this part to come to production, so I sold the car. ;) A desperately needed part. Thanks for making it.

If GTOLou can't do it for some reason, I will happy to try it out for you. I have a '74 T/A that I was just going to start plumbing for a new fuel pump. I was considering putting a sump on the factory tank, but if you guys have a 1/2" sender, I would rather do that.

I think this sending unit is fine, just like it is. My car/tank has this extra tube for AC. Without this tube it is a breeze - the car HAS a deep indentation between the mounting rails for the tank. I think Rob set up the unit to have the two fittings come out exactly halfway between these two. An AC car has this extra tubing that gets in the way - but is still no big deal.

The sending unit fit fine in the stock tank (the only minimal thing is that the negative ground is about 1" too short (LOL) - no big deal obviously).

Here are pics - ask questions - I think this unit is ready.....

The pic from the top - the sending unit needs to be as close to halfway between the rails as possible (I adjusted this - the AC tube hinders this a little).

Also - it is a little cramped once the tank is in - it is better to get your an-lines on there before you mount the tank.

I have a cheap brass fitting on the return I will just use a rubber line for this.

My plumbing is still evolving.

The other thing to cover here is thanking PY for letting us put this stuff on their forum.
