Rechromed Spinners, getting the black lettering back
 

I will soon be rechroming my set of spinners from my '64. (thanks for the referral to Paul's) Now I'm trying to figure out the best way to repaint the sunken lettering found on them ("pontiac motor division") Has anyone gone through this before? Anyone have a best approach?

Right now I'm thinking of dabbing a black soaked sponge all over it - then immediately wipe off the excess that remains above... and hoping it leaves the chrome quickly/completely.

I usually tape off the bulk of the chrome and then spray the letters not worrying about the over spray. I then come back with lacquer thinner (or even Brake Klean) on a piece of old T-shirt and wipe away the over spray. Either product will remove paint even after it is totally dry, so no hurry in clean-up. I usually have the rag pretty wet and stay away from the letters the first go round, and then use less product on the rag as I get closer to the edges of the letters. There's probably a more professional way, but I haven't found it.

Thanks for the tips. I'll just keep it basic, like you explained. ...or maybe get a tiny little brush and a surgeon's hand.

I do it basically the way Lust4 does it but sometimes I will also use an old t-shirt pulled tightly over the end of a putty knife and with the rag just barely damp with thinner. I then rub it over the top of recessed letters. It has always given me clean edges and doesn't allow me to get inside the recessed painted area. You just need to not have the rag dripping wet and keep the rag pulled tight - you can double over the rag if you want a little more rag on the end of the blade. FWIW I wouldn't use a brush at all - too risky and sloppy.

You can use a brush...I've done that kind of stuff with a small brush for years...you just don't worry about trying to stay inside the letters. Cleanup around the letters the same way you would clean up the overspray. The same way these guys described it above.
Your idea of the sponge would work too. I've even used a wooden kitchen match, a toothpick etc.
