Bumper Guards
 

I’ve been hunting for a nice set of bumper guards (option code V32) for months. I often see them pop up on ebay but the irreplaceable rubber strips are always damaged, dings, cuts, gouges, etc…
I finally ended up buying a set from ebay with damaged rubber strips. I used the 3M flexible parts filler (part #5896) “endura filler” to fix them and I think they came out pretty good. It was quick and easy too.
After I “filled” them, I painted them with the SEM landau black paint. I don’t know how long this repair will last but they look “good as new” for now.
Here's what I did:
Cleaned them up really well with soap and water, dried them with compressed air.
Taped of the chrome, sanded down any high spots and cut away any loose rubber pieces.
Cleaned the rubber again, this time with acetone and applied filler. I used a razor blade as a spreader. Sanded with “old used” 220 grit sand paper. Not too rough!!
Reapplied coats of the 3M filler as necessary and painted several light coats. That’s it.
When I “thought” I was done filling and sanding I sprayed the guards with the black paint. It was then that I realized I needed another coat of filler and some more sanding. I couldn’t see the imperfections until the parts were painted.

Very Nice. I am finding that it is easier to restore a lot of these parts rather than finding new or better ones. I think of it as a "green build" I am using as many recycled parts as I can. It takes time to clean and repair parts, but sometimes it is faster and cheaper compared to locating/buying/shipping. Especially when your idea of good is not the same as the sellers'.
