URGENT ELECTRIC FAN QUESTION
 

I have a Ford Taurus 2 speed electric fan in my bird for over a year. It is hooked up thru a 70 amp relay and I also have a 20 amp fuse in the line supplying the relay. However I also put a fuse in for the wire which comes directly from the fan to the ground. This has a 30 amp fuse. Today I switched the low speed and high speed wire going to the relay from the fan so my fan will run on high. Now everytime I blow that 30 amp fuse on the ground wire as soon as the fan is turned on.

DO I NEED THAT FUSE AT ALL???????? I can't think of a reason, not sure why I put it in the first place. :mad::gag::old:

You dont need the fuse on the ground side of the fan motor. I would make sure that you do run a heavy guage (14) or bigger cable for the ground though. The shorter this wire the better.

That 20A fuse is protecting the wiring to the relay, 20A maybe too large depending on wire size. From your relay to fan you need either a fuse or a fusible link to protect the fan wiring. I would use 10g wire and at least a 50A fuse. If your fan already has heavy enough wire you can just add a large fuse holder and change the 30A fuse to a 50A.

I had 2 fuses, one on the realy supply side (which did not blow) and one on the ground wire coming from the fan, which is not needed. It is running fine now, however that high speed fan draws a lot of power. My volt meter is around 12-13 now, before it was around 14-15 (when I had the fan running on low). I will check how many amp alternator I have with my mechanic.
