early 70's 455 YC 66 heads < 100K need rebuild, intake to pan.
Is it worth $500.
I'm figuring it might be a 72 with only 250hp

66 heads on a 455 should be a 71 and 325HP.

I'd say go for it. More reasonable price to me would be $350 to $400.00

Yes it's worth it, but in this economy I'm sure the seller is willing to negotiate. It's not they're making anymore 455s...

I paid $400 for each of my 455s. A 71 with #66 heads, intake to pan and a 73 or 74 with 4 bolt mains and 4X 1h heads carb to pan. Your 66 heads will need the hard exhaust seats installed.

The block has a casting # 304783.
There is a 71 stamped by the didtributer opening.
Intake heads , pan and covers were on the block, the rest was scatterd about.
I could not turn the crank manually.
I am a complete novice with this.

He had raced it a few times 12 years ago and pulled it when oil was gomming out the exhaust.

For $450 its just going to sit around for many years before I can afford a rebuild, and it might just be a rusted hunk of metal.

I think I should put the money to finishing the body.

Spray the block, heads,intake and any other iron and steel with LPS 3. They won't rust. If the engine is assembled be sure to lube the cylinders and turn the engine over every now and then.

Do professional engine builders already have 400/455 blocks available.

That's not an endless supply...
