Raising deck height of a trailer?
 

I have an 18 ft Bri Mar car hauler. Nice little trailer with a bit of an issue. The beaver tail is about 5 ft long, and the rear crossmember is only about 11 inches off the ground. Drags the tail frequently.

IS there a way to raise the deck safely? Could go up a few inches.

Get a ball hitch that is a couple of inches lower. That will bring the tail up!!

add to that taller tires. What suspention does the trailer have? springs or torque bars?

If it's torsion axle add a set of leaf springs.

Any way to add height where the springs attach to the trailer?

What you'll need to do is remove the spring hangers and either get longer ones or Add a boxed section of Heavier steel than the frame is. I'd weld it solid [ make damned sure you've got good penetration when it's done] and make it at least 6" longer than the hangers for both springs. I'd also add a gusset to the OE frame from the new section.

Do this right, that's a safety issue.

Check your axles, if they set on top of the springs you could mount them below & gain 3"-4". Most axles have a bend in the middle to give a little + camber so you can't just flip it over, you'll need to weld another set of spring mounts to the axles to do this.

You could also attach a couple of steel wheeled casters at the rear to keep the sparks from flying. Mount them so they are just barely below the back of the tail.

My trailer sets low also but I like the low entry angle, doesn't catch the front spoiler on lower cars.

Agree - plus - "lower trailer" means lower "center of gravity" which means more stability....

I'd leave it low and just be careful about going in and out of driveways/gas stations etc. I added some skid plates to the rear (corners) of my enclosed car trailer just for this purpose.

Last trailer was up a bit higher, is one needs a 6 inch drop to get level using a 2001 GMC K2500HD. My Wells Cargo enclosed trailer has no drop to be level.

I can drop the axles under the springs as suggested above, that should be enough to raise it about 4 inches.
Anyobody ever use these? WHt do ou do with the old perch? Seem sto me it would be in the way.

Keith, Depending on the configuration of the mount and the kit you may not have to do anything with the current mount.

Dexter is a major axle manufactuer and I have used their products they are good quality , as for lifting I would keep it low and find some rollers to mount under the beaver tail to let it slide on I used a set of rollers from a conveyor ( they where 18" wide ) and it slides over curbs without damage to the back .

Did talk to Bri Mar, did recommend the axle flip to under the springs. CG of truck is still higher, shouldn't be a stability issue. CG of enclosed Wells cargo is higher as well. Not sure if the comparison is valid.

How old are the springs? I replaced mine and gained a few inches in height.

Go and get a set of these from your local RV/Trailer dealer. You'll still bump but they will take the abuse.
