Dual Snorkel Identification

4 Attachment(s)
Guys,

I know this won't be as fun as analyzing a picture of a barn find judge or anything like that but I need some help with the air cleaner I have.

It came on my 68 GTO and I knew it was wrong as it was a dual snorkel and I assumed it was a 69 or later piece. Upon looking for a trade for a 68 single snorkel some questions have come up.

So, what is this? I don't want to misrepresent what I have if I trade or sell it.

Thanks,

Jason

Not a '69, as it has a larger angle between the snorkels...Could be 71-72...You should have a date stamped on the inside...Post it if you find it...

Haven't been able to find a date of any kind on it. Or any other engraving.

I believe it is a '70 air cleaner since it does not have the carb vent tube hole that the '71-'72 had. Other than that carb vent tube hole (which could easily be added), '70-'72 is the same.

Dates are usually stamped on the top of the hump around the carb opening. They were usually done in an ink (blue I think) but also may be stamped into the metal slightly. If it has been repainted, it may be tough to find.

Hi,
All of the 1969 dual snorkle air cleaners that I have seen have two vacuum motors.
One on each snorkle. A 1969 also has a temp vacuum switch on the underside to cause the vacuum motors to open once the engine gets hot.

These are just missing here, as you can see the holes......but still not a '69, due to the 2 snorkels being too close together as opposed to the '69s ('70s were closer together to accommodate the Cruise Control unit being moved to driver-side of engine block)...

The mounting area looks like its deeper like for the 70 and up Firebirds?

Does the cleaner appear to be modified?

jpdog357 10-02-2009 02:26 PM

It doesn't look to be modified.

Nope, it is definitely not an F-body dual snorkel. F-body ones don't have the ribs around dome, are deeper, and have a relief on the backside to allow cleanance for the distributor since they sat lower on the engine. I am sure that it is a 1970 dual snorkel for an A-body (also Grand Prix used this same air cleaner). It is the same for 1971-72 except they drilled that carb vent tube hole in for those years.

69 and early 70's do not have the carb vent tube.Late 70's thru 72 have the carb vent tube. The Air cleaner has to be a 69 or early 70 used on " A " bodies and 70 G.P.'s...

Yup, I agree 'cept Robz is correct in that the '69s have a wider spread between the snorkles. Soooo, it has to be an early '70 version. I have one exactly like with a date code in Nov of '69 (can't remember that exact date).

'69 Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner

I've been shopping around for a replacement '69 Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner myself. This last spring my friend and I went to the Spring Carlisle Meet in Carlisle, Pa. We discovered PY & Ames had new Dual Snorkel Air Cleaners. The one guy a Ames told me that it would fit a '69. I was hesitant about buying it. I'm glad I didn't!!! Yesterday my friend and I went to the Fall Carlisle Meet. I took my air cleaner along to compare the snorkels. Ames didn't have any with them this time, but PY did. I had one of the PY guys take the new one out of the box. It was way off for a '69. At one time I measured the outside of the one snorkel to the other outside on my '69. It measured 21 3/4". As my friend and I walked around the Flea Market we came across another private individual that had a used one For Sale. I measured it with my small measureing tape; it measured only 18". The guy told me it was for a '70 GTO. Weather he was right or not I don't know. But it sure wasn't going to fit a '69. Last summer at the Saratoga Springs GTOAA Convention we spoke with John Sawruk before he passed away about the dual snorkel air cleaners. He said there are so many of them out; that it would be best to have one in your hand to compare.

Searched haven't found a date marking. But, I did find a small hole just in front of the carb opening and I have been told by another member of the forum that would make this a 71/72? Anyone confirm?

Just want to make sure I am offering the right trade if I can find one.

Thanks,

Jason

The carb vent tube hole should be about 3/4" in diameter and I didn't see it in your pictures above, but, maybe it is there. I would just list it as a '70-'72 dual snorkel air cleaner. If it doesn't have the carb vent tube hole, it is correct for early '70. The carb vent tube hole could always be added if needed. If it does have the hole, then it is correct for late '70 through '72.

Thats the whole. It was covered with a piece of black tape.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Is Pontiac the only one who used the dual snorkel? Didn't Olds have a similar one?

Hi guys, This is off a 69 gto, has the twin snorkels but they are slightly wider, which was a 1 year only manufacture. I bought it to use on my 72 Formula as they look exactly the same, but how wrong was i. it doesn't fit as it hasn't got the vent tube hole.

jpdog357 05-25-2010 10:49 PM

Guys,

I have found someone willing to trade my dual snorkel which was aptly identified as a late 70 through 72 piece. The guy is looking to us this on his 69 but is concerned with the clearance for his air conditioning bits.

What are your thoughts? Should he be worried? Is the wider snorkels a problem on a 69?

Thanks,

Jason

Guys, please some advice.

Thanks,

Jason

It will fit fine. The only fit problem is using a 70-72 snorkel on a 69 or older with cruise. The 69 had wider spacing to clear the cruise servo unit that mounted on the front of the drivers valve cover.

my friend has a 70-72 unit on his 69 GTO with air and it fits fine. 99% of people will never notice it.
