Adding a Tach?
Any advice on what will fit(factory or aftermarket) in the large right hand dash hole? Mine is just a filler on the Grand Am and a tach would be nice. Thanks -Jim

What year Grand Am
A tach from any Grand Prix 78-88 will fit a GA 78-80
but the appearance will vary try to get the wire from the HEI to the back of the tach there is a switch on the back of the tach for 6 or 8 cylinder engines You'll have to pull the whole pod first (speedo idiot lites and tach) to access the screws that mount it Good luck |
I have a 5" VDO with a shift lite that with a little modification fits in real nice. I took the unit out of it's casing and the shift light adjuster you see on the side has a 6" ribbon so it can be sitting remote from the unit. I had to cut out some of the cluster housing to make it fit but it was a fairly simple job. I am going to change all the gauges to VDO but there's no 5" VDO speedo so that wil have to be worked out

i put a 2.5" one in the dummy air vent hole to the left of the centre gauge cluster on my wifes 83 Grand Prix. fit's perfectly in the factory hole, just pop out the dummy air vent. and slide it in. if you want, you can use a dremel to make some divets in the cylinder of the tach for the clips in the dash to grab. once you pull the dummy vent out, it's pretty self explanitory. the steering wheel kind of obstructs the view, but it looks pretty stock, and it's a good use of that previously useless hole.

I used autometer gauges and just mounted them in the stock location. I keep most of the printed circuit sheet so I could still have the blinkers and brights indicator. It was a lot of cutting an work but I think well worth it. I think they are Z gauges but can't remember right now.

When I did the ones in my 81 I used the larger guages and mounted them in a modified OE guage holder. They sat behind the fascia and looked close to OEM.
I don't have pics of the install and have cut the car up do to rust. Mike |
I used equus gauges in my dash. http://gbodyforum.com/photos/albums/...l_PICT0005.JPG
