Ring gear wear pattern
4 Attachment(s)
Hi all.
I have changed the ring gear in my 12-bolt axel. The stock ratio was 3.07 and now it is 3.73. It is the first time Iīve done that, so I want your oppinion about the wear pattern. The checking distance is 2.832" and I got it spot on. I assembled it all and by the pattern I got the first time, the pinion was too shallow. Then I moved the pinion about 0.007" towards the centerline of the ring gear to get the pattern you see on the pictures. The backlash is 0.010" like it says on the ring gear. What do you guys think? Is it ok or should I re-do it again? Like I said earlier, my English isīnt so good so I hope that you understand what I mean Regards Johan , Sweden |
I know little or nothing about setting up a ring and pinion. But this guy does.

Its hard to judge by a picture alone. It looks as though the pattern is a little close to the face of the gear meaning that the pinion is still a little shallow. It should be ok as is, but if you have the time you might want to add just a little more shim under the pinion bearing. Try another .002"

Thanks for the advice and the link.
I going to put more shims under the pinion and see what pattern I get. Really appreciate the help. /Johan |
