Ignition coils
 

Is there a ignition coil that can be mounted horizontally instead of vertically ? It's a points system.. thanks,Tom

All of the 1948-1955 Chevy pickup trucks with the 6 cylinder always had the coils mounted upside down so mounting it horizontally should not be a problem if the coil is sealed.:)

I thought that the newer stuff had to be mounted vertical. Can't they act up when they get hot if not straight up and down?

Can't remember which, but one of the after market companies states their coils has to be mounted upright to keep oil from leaking out.
Other than some saying it here at PY, that's the only published info I've seen about it.

So to me quality of the coil will determine how it has to be mounted. Some GM cars came with the coils mounted horizontal, and upside down that's done been mentioned. Pretty much all V8 fords came with horizontal mounted coils. That's cannister type coils for points and their electronic triggered.

Anyhow (IMO), if you have a GOOD coil, you should be able to mount it however you want to.

Yeh, I haven't found anything concrete on it.

I have a Summit high performance(cheaper) coil. My LeMans originally had the coil mounted horizontally so that's how I mounted it. Today I took the wire off and a ton of oil leaked out. I was like "What the Hell?!!", so I searched and found this thread. Now you and I know: Cheap coil, leak oil . Jim

The older Mopars are mounted horizontally on the intake, I wonder what they have to go through ? I emailed a couple of tech support people and told them I have a 69 roadrunner and then another time I have a 67 firebird. They wish-washed out of a firm answer by stating it's okay to mount them in the factory location. So my question is why is it okay to mount the coil in a stock location on a mopar (horizontally) and not on a firebird. I think the support person that contacted me should go into politics. Talked out of both sides of his mouth ! Are the Epoxy filled ones any good ?

68grandprix, so far I have never had any oil leaking. I have run a couple of different coils for gitz and shiggles. I have the IC12 on now, I had the carquest brand on it and the one I took off seven years ago was an original 202 coil which still works. All have been horizontal. I am looking for a bracket that will allow me to mount it vertically where it should go, but it is tight in there !

factory bracket? same bracket for either isnt it?
vertical on firewall or back of head, horizontal on intake manifold bolt

I have a bracket for 68, but I have the 67 accelerator rod set-up. What did they use in 67. 68 and up they bolted the coil bracket to the cable bracket.

regardless, my preference is to mount the coil away from engine heat, like on the firewall. Mounted to the engine, the coil will be at least at engine temp plus some operating heat.

The downside is that engine movement will possibly loosen the high voltage connection from the tower, and opening the hood if it has water on it may drip onto the coil.

Also additional heat may cause an internal pressure increase, possibly causing a oil leak.
