[QUOTE=1978 T/A;4000620]Well the last 2 weeks I have been working on the GTO for my summer project. The plans include new rods, intake, heads, cam, converter, exhaust, and to completely overhaul the suspesion.
I got my baselines for the car. Best track time was a 13.79 @ 99.40. Car put down 259/334 to the wheels. my 69 GTO (AC, M20, 3.23, stock Gardner RA 3 exhaust including manifolds) put down 278 and 395. It is a 428 with 48 heads and an 068 cam bone stock (to 69 428HO manual) except I lowered compression to 9.5 and it is 60 over. I didn't run it yet but I would say based on feel and 25 years of experience with many GTO's that it would also be about a 100mph car. By the way this is my second car with the identical engine and power train and it dynoed almost identical numbers. by comparison my experience with typical stock 350horse auto air GTO's with non hiperf muffler shop duals is that they put down 230/325-330. $speed cars are usually about 5% higher due to less loss in the tranny. |
Looking forward to seeing the progress.

I was pretty suprised when I saw the numbers to be honest. I think there was still room to improve in the ets. When I had the car put on a chassis dyno I saw the car pulled all the way to 5300 rpms. When I went to the track I left the car in drive where it automatically shifts at 5000 rpms. So who knows maybe there was another mph left in the old setup. But I am not looking back! :D

Some more progress.

Nice looking '69 GTO.....need any MO. license plate to add to your collection? ;)

great photos

Thanks guys. And I think I have enough plates 1-GTO lol.

Made some more progress today. We finished tearing apart the motor to bare block, removed the air shocks, and dropped the tank. And I was able to find a suprise. :)

The car did not come with one when purchased at the carpet had already been pulled up. I was hoping there was one, and I lucked out considering the shape of it. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject014-1.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject015-1.jpg |
Original buildsheet in this condition??? How many miles were on this car and where did it spend most of its life??? That tank and sheet look perfect! Nice looking car...good luck with the project.
|
The car has a 178,000 and has spent all of but the last 15 years of its life in California (Hence the original black Cali plates). I was shocked that it was in the shape it was in to be honest. It was brittle because of the age, but it was not in a pile of crumbs which was a relief lol.
Thanks for the compliment. I think this Sunday I will knock out the rear end! |
That build sheet is in great shape for being above the gas tank. :)
|
Last week I have spent power washing the underneath of the car. It was a PITA removing the undercoating and I am still not even done lol.
Before http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...arriage008.jpg After http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...roject/001.jpg I was originaly going to paint the floor pans black. But once I started removing the undercoating the original paint was in great condition. There is even the factory Verdero green overspray present. So I have decided to clear the undercarriage and paint what areas need attention. |
More progress today. More cleaning followed along with removal of the rear end, and trans.

Great photos, I that your son helping you?

I am 19, and the bigger kid with the cutoff shirt is my buddy from work.

Some more progess. Cleaning/painting is very time consuming so there is not a whole lot parts coming off.
I cleaned/painted the cross member and tank. Looks like tomorrow I will be doing some final cleaning on the rear diff and hopefully have it primered. I noticed when I had cleaned off the old grease/road grime there appeared to be some of the factory paint. I thought it was kinda neat. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject/0042.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject/0052.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject/0032.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject/0072.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oject/0062.jpg |
Updates: Motor is at the machine shop. I ended up having to buy new pistons so I am waiting on those. The underneath of the car is cleaned/painted and this weekened I will install the rear end with new upper/lower control arms, springs and shocks. :D
|
Updates: Rear end is finally finished. Now to start on the front!
