Muffler configuration for 1st gen Firebird

Hey huys, did some searching and did not find a clear answer. Gonna get my exhaust together for the '68 and need to know what muffler configuration gives the best fit.

I know I would prefer offset/ offset, but think it may present fitment problems. Is offset/ center the accepted "proper" way to go?

Thanks guys, I hope to get this going before the weekend.

My 68 is offset offset and I have no issues. Pypes 2.5" system w/ x-pipe.

I have the same set-up as just501. I selected the Pro-V mufflers at the time. I don't think they make that particular one anymore or they renamed it, but they tuck up nice out of the way..

I appreciate the info guys.

Hopefully I can get the headrers on before I head down to the exhaust shop. I'll have to makle some hillbilly downturns for the 4 mile journey. :D Not enough time in the day!

Thanks!

You may want to consider using the single (still dual exhaust) transverse muffler (tucked up between the axle and fuel tank), eliminates all center clearance and fit issues, esp. w/convertible (probably cooler at back seats also?). I know Pypes has this muffler.

I appreciate the suggestion on the crossflow. It would tuck up tight. However, with more bends in the piping in addition to a more restrictive and even louder muffler, it just did not fit the bill this time.

If I had a 400 or smaller engine, I would give it a much harder look.

The Flowmaster American Thunder systems are Offset/Center which fit 67-81. It really all depends on who is building the system. 2nd gen firebirds use an o/c but I've bought cars that people have had systems made with o/o so really either way will work.

the bird gets the best fit with o/c. The offset are in front and close together; this allows for a tight package under the car. The center output is in the back and allows the istaller a lots more 'wiggle' rooom, allowing such fancy things, like completly hiding the tailpipes under the car except for a small tip, sticking just beneath the rear valance.

The offset/ offset worked out perfect.

Anything was an improvement!

Got a custom X pipe as well. Sounds is great and not at all too loud even with those short 14" muffs.

I had a flowmaster system like that on my 67 camaro. I was really pleased with it. It was 2.5 inch mandrel bent and fit perfectly.

Hi guys I'm new to this forum but I have a 67 firechicken convertible with a reworked 326( 91/2 cr), anti pump-ups, performer intake,hc55A cam, husler headers,670 carb hei distributor, putting out 300 horse and 360 ft/lbs of torque.(dynoed). I plan to run 21/2 magnaflow with x crossover is this a better system than the transverse by magnaflow

You should be able to get a system w/both the X crossover and transverse muffler. Go with the X, then decide, two mufflers in front of the axle, or one behind the axle.
