i'm sure you hear this every day.

so a kid comes up to me and says "nice car man; what year is that?" "1971", i replied.
"are you the original owner?"
...sure. i bought it from the dealer when i was 5.

also: do people always ask if your car is a '69? no matter what car i point out or drive, people always say "whats that, a 69?" umm...no.

how bout this one for all you 68-72 GTO owners: "is that a real judge?"
hmmm...does it say "the judge" anywhere?
at least it gets their attention.

Sure, but it helps that the two cars I drive the most are both '69s.;)

And my favorite - "is that your midlife crisis car" to which I answer, "yea, I decided I needed it when I was 10!" :D

I thought I would resolve that problem by putting "1967GTO" on my plates om my '67 and "1970GTO" on the plates on my '70.

It didn't work. "That's supposed to have tir-power you know", "those aren't the right wheels for a '65" and....that's not a coreect spoiler for a ...'69.

Lot's of experts out there.

I have personalized plates on my Can Am that read "RARE 77" but I still get people asking me what year is it from time to time. Somethimes they'll also say "Oh I feel so stupid asking you that after I already read your license plate" (LOL).

yes, my local "hot rod idiot" asks: "big block in there?"
i say; "yeah. all pontiacs had big blocks."

I like it better when they ask the year, you tell them, and they argue with you........

Well, I guess during the 8.5 year resto, I ordered the wrong parts!

Happened to my buddy a few weeks ago. We took his 71 Chevelle to an outdoor bar and this guy walks up to us and said "nice car! What year is that, 66-67? What do you have in it?" He then walked away and got in his new SLK.

I've been asked the same things many times about my '61, I was 5 years old when it was built as well.

the really young ones ask 'how many mpg does it get?' and then walk away before you can answer.

question that gets to me is

and they think since its old,they can buy it for little or nothing

good point: you often see that offer, but what if you came up to someone with a smokin' wife; 'good lookin' broad. will you divorce her so i can have her?'. that attitude is simply amazing.

I've gotten more of the What is that? With this 69 G/P than I have any other car I've driven in ad a guy at church and his dad stop and inspect it when they were leaving. the son was probably 55. As we walked up NICE car I thanked them and had to smile. Once in a while you get a good one.

Drive it to Logansport Sat and had my BIL's SIL's husband ask the right questions about it then dropped the mileage comment. When I told him she probably got 15 he asked how I could afford to drive it. I told him it was cheaper than a therapist.

When I drive my 70 GP...people say nice 69...I say no its a 70 and they will argue with me...idiots...do they really think that I don't know what year my own car is??

When I had my 54 Star Chief conv, someone asked me if I had bought it new. I was born in 1958! Do I look that bad??

And I am usually asked if my 72 Grand Prix is a 70. I thought the original 1972 N.C. license plate on front would be a hint. Surprisingly though, the guys who know what it is will ask if it has the 455 or the 400. If they get that far, I know they have some knowledge of Pontiacs.

Steve Recently had a guy, who hung around when I was street racing, ask if my 69 had a 455 in it. Acted disappointed when I told him no not yet! He's turned into a horse person, does a lot of work with disabled kids and I was shocked he remembered my race car.

As I said above some people suprise you pleasantly.

It’s even more fun when you run into an original owner. Talked to a guy who was the original owner of a 73, split bumper z28. I was 15 when they made the car, and we got into the conversation with me asking if he picked it up on a certain used car lot in ’77, a few months before I bought my first 9. He said that the only work ever done on the car was a paint job, but it was clearly a rotisserie resto pretty much completely rebuild with repo metal.

He was a local boy, but he didn’t seem to recall any of the street racing areas in a fifty-mile or so radius. Everything else was deer in the headlights. When the topic of biased tires came into play, he looked dumbfounded and said he had no idea about what I was talking about as to bias ply tires clacking around as the flat spots worked themselves free.

I didn’t give it a second thought when I asked the guy, “how old are you?” He stuttered and stammered for at least 5 or so seconds, finally blurting out that he was in his mid fifties. As I sized him up for age, something I didn’t pay attention to, he looked to be about my age, making me a bigger idiot than he is because guys who look my age are about 20 years younger than I.

As a 9 owner since ’77, the is-it-a-9 syndrome is a long standing thing, and I have heard it in many other applications. The most amazing thing is that when these people see a 9, at least mine, they always pick 7 or 8, every time. This has gone on for almost 30 years.

And everyone owned one. Just ditched another car everyone owned a Seville STS. The difference is that they ‘left it at home in the garage.’

The one I liked was during a parade: one of two boys about 8 to 10 years old hollered out “nice Firebird,” to his buddy’s amazement. His buddy asked him how did he know that it was a Firebird. Using a matter-of-fact tone, he said “says so on the fender.”
