pulley question
 
I have a a/c 69 car which I am in the process of refitting the a/c.
At the moment it has non a/c top and bottom pulleys
part #'s 9790846 and 9796060.
I have picked up the a/c pulley which fits to the balancer part # 9790843.
From what I have read I need to change my 2 pulleys to a/c ones
part #'s 9790842 and 9796061.
Why is my question, what is the problem?:confused:

Non A/c cars have a larger diameter w/p pulley than the A/C cars. This accomplishes two things. The first is to spin the W/P faster for better coolant flow. the second is it speeds up the Alternator so it can charge a bit more to keep up with the added draw of A/C.

Mike's correct. This is a system and matched components must be used to ensure proper functioning. Get both pulleys and install.

Thanks for that, makes sense. I have the short water pump, can anyone tell me if the part #'s I'm chasing are correct?

you sure about that, speeding up the alt?

a change in w/p pulley diameter would have no affect on the speed of the alt.

only a larger crank ( or smaller alternator ) pulley would affect its speed.

and now that i read that again, going to a bigger w/p pulley, wouldnt that in fact make it spin slower? it's the same as going to a smaller ( under drive ) crank pulley?

I think he's speaking from the A/C car perspective, since that is what ozzman has.

Is this pulley for a 69 GTO or 69 firebirds only??

The GTO restoration guide, page 372, lists 9796061
, so looks like GTO application.

I do have power steering and A/C and the short water pump.

But it also lists 9796062, this is where I'm confused, one is for Firebird and one isn't but no mention about GTO.

The '061' is listed for the Firebird.
The '062' is listed for All Pontiacs, which I'd say includes the GTO.

The '061' is a smaller diameter than the '062'.

9796062 lists as; 69 all V8 A.C. (2 groove 7 3/16 dia) (use with oe waterpump cast number 9796351).

9796061 lists as F/8 H.T. A.C. (2 groove 6 1/4 dia) (use with oe waterpump cast number 9796351). As 68gtoMN listed above.
