tapshift trans in a non tapshift car

Will this work in just the auto mode?
Im using an 06 G6 GTP trans in a 97 GP GTP body and motor.

You should PM Smittyseng he would know. My guess is that the tapshift button simply activates a solenoid causes a downshift or upshift.
