Speedo cables on 4-speed cars

Can anyone tell me why the speedo cable on 4-speed cars are 2 piece?? I have a 79 TA and I managed to fry the upper cable (hit the exhaust mainfold) and killed my speedometer. Curious as to why it's 2 piece. Thanks:usa2:

My 79 4 speed had the same 2-piece cable.
I could not find an original replacement, but did find a
long single piece one that works fine.

I have replaced all three components. The adapter between the two cables is 15618398 (ACDELCO).
You can find the two cables at OREILLY website.
CA-3033 lower and CA3009 upper.

They do make a longer single piece one that can be used instead of the 2 pieces. I think I got mine from pep boys, can't remember...
