We were living in Canada when BTO hit up there. My favorite album of theirs is "Not Fragile", still one of my greatest in my opinion. When you hear those guitars kick up, you just think of Canada, cold weather, mountains, rough voices, and big ol' beards on lumberjacks. A rock critic summed it up best when he said that the song "Not Fragile" began with a catchy bass riff, then in typical BTO style, the guitars and drums pound the riff mercilessly until the end of the song, and it's brilliant. "Taking Care Of Business" was never a favorite of mine, neither was "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet", but those were their biggest hits. Personally, for those looking for a great cruisin' song and love straight ahead hard rock, listen to "Roll On Down The Highway" at high volume. Canadian hard rock at its best. |
I never was a BTO fan, nothing against them, just weren't my favorite band.

Burton is the man! They have patched things up now (most likely its an "I need the money tour") but when Randy and Burton split it was brutal. Listen to "Long Gone" sometime and remember it was written by Burton about Randy. The Guess Who were also HUGE in Canada back then, Burton Cummings was one of the best singers in rock. I recall reading he had a drug problem, and Randy Bachman wanted to start his own band, without drugs. Cummings laughed at him and said it couldn't be done, but Randy did it. "Sledgehammer" is a brutal song, with an odd tempo, from the "Not Fragile" album. My favorite was always "Rock Is My Life", great solo in that one. BTO called their album "Not Fragile" because they thought rock was going too soft, and Yes had just had a hit with their album "Fragile" (which had 'Roundabout'). Great title, and a cover showing a box of gears in a crate was genius. The original printing of that album had an embossed cover, so you feel the gears. The Guess Who, April Wine, BTO, all from that same time period. They were all huge in Canada, they signed American deals, got a second life, then faded. |

My favorite is "Takin Care of Business". Was in Phoenix back in 95 for a buisness trip with Honeywell. A couple of us went out on the town and got bombed. The guy we were with had a 5.0 Mustang and we were running down I 17 about 100mph. Thought I was going to end up dead in the back seat of that Mustang and the last thing I'd hear was "Takin Care of Business".

There was a website a few years back that had vintage pictures of drag racing at a certain track. There was a picture of Bachman at the drag races.
