1969 GTO - Hood Won't Open!
 

I put the hood on today, and tried to align it. But during the adjustment process the hood was moved a little to far back and now it won't open. Do you guys have any ideas? I spent about a half hour messing with it and got no where.

FYI its a 69 GTO.

Something similar happened on my 68 after repaint/reattachement. Although it may sound silly I had to readjust because the hood release spring wasn't fully clearing the latch(pop up but still engaged). Try continue holding the release hood latch while lifting at the same time.

I did try that. I pushed up on the hood from underneath the car and had my father hold the latch.

The hood is closed all the way. It seems like the latch is getting caught up on something.

Did you try pushing down on the hood (hard) while at the same time pulling the release? That's the only way that mine will open. I never actually looked at it but the latch hook is probably worn a bit, and pushing down on the hood gets me enough clearance to pull the latch past the worn spot.

Pushing up on the hood isn't going to do any good as long as the latch hook is engaged.

I did try that as well. The hood will partially open (almost enough to get my fingers underneath). But after that it stays stuck. It is unlatched in that position, because when I close it I can hear it latch again. I never had this problem with the car at all. It all happened when I reinstalled the hood, and the alignment changed.

OK, good to hear it is getting that far. That's exactly what mine does, and then I have to push down a bit while pulling on the release again to get it to pop open. It is still hooked up.

So I suggest pushing down on it a bit (not enough to hook it latch all the way in again though), continue to pull on the release and bounce the hood a bit to get it unhooked. Pushing the hood side to side a bit might help.

I've had hoods do what you are describing when making adjustments, but always managed to get them open without too much trouble. Sounds like yours has gotten good and stuck.

I had a similar problem on my 69 LeMans unfortunately the hood latch failed and was stuck closed. We ended up having to unbolt the latch to free the hood. This is difficult with the hood closed of course.

If the latch is still good try pushing down on the hood while continuosly pulling on the hood release rod. If the hood comes up partially, then slightly push down on the hood and again pull the release rod holding it continuously while then trying to raise the hood.

There seems to be a dual catch on those latches maybe a safety latch of some kind. Good luck

Got it open today after messing with it for 5 mins today! I had to push on the underneath of the hood with my feet while holding the latch. Thanks for the input guys!
