Open hood scoops, or not........
 

Hello all,
I am going to be painting my bumper and hood scoops this weekend and am contemplating opening up my scoops before paint. Has anyone else opened theirs up?? Is it worth it for the added cooling of the engine compartment?? I guess rain would be the only negative aspect, but i wont be driving it in the rain hopefully............

Buy a second set and paint them at the same time - that way you can swap them as you wish.

Just because you want to do it and it'll look kinda sharp? Go for it!

Since i sold my GTO, have extra set.
Was gon'a do it for the :cool: factor myself.
Paid $50 or $75 for the pair.
Think it was from Boss. Or was that the non a/c kick panels? Still have those too...

My H/T's are open (did this with a dremel tool, just before it got painted back in '84)...not much extra cooling compared to what it already gets from grilles...just more of a wow factor, IMO...I also added the RAM AIR stickers...gets alot of people asking questions, until I open the hood...:-)

Open em up. I used to stick a couple hand towels in them if it was raining. Jim

Mine are already opened. Someone cut them out a while back, I need to finish them off with a Dremel.

Wouldn't all the air be blocked by the underhood insulation anyway?

Yeah,I was assuming there was no pad.

You guys probably already know this but it's been pretty well established that the GTO hood scoops are in about the worst place to catch any cool air anyway. Better if it's back by the windshield and open towards the rear...like the cowl induction those "Heartbeat" guys have on their cars. :o
I still like our scoops much better for aesthetic purposes though...

Thanks for the input guys. At this point I won't have a pad under the hood so that isn't a concern. I do like the look of the open scoops and I will be cutting them out today. I think I will make some soft plastic plugs to carry with me in case of rain. I suppose that with the location of the scoops most of the air just glides over the top of them so cooling effect is not there.................but the (cool) factor will be........ ram air stickers,,, probably not......

You could add the repop ram air system for the "cool" factor for not a lot of money. Jim

Back in 1984 I drove my 68 from N.H. to Indianapolis w/open scoops and got caught in a severe rainstorm in Ohio and she never missed a beat due to the rain that entered. The cooler air available makes a differance stop light to stop light rather than the higher speed "ram affect" and that's where these cars beat most.

Well, got them cut out today and ready for final sanding tomorrow. Hope to have the scoops and bumper painted by Saturday. After thats finished it is on to my list of items to complete. Maybe I will get to drive it this year finally, been off the road for nine years for frame off......

I thought hood bracing was different for Ram-Air hoods. I would also have to go to a different air cleaner setup and I have a 1" spacer with a RPM intake & 850 Holley. Does all this still fit under the hood? Its a thought, but I'm thinking it will stay as is for now.....

Are those RA pans for QJets only?

I run a Holley with a 1" spacer
But i use standard air cleaner to get the rim up to the pan .
I did have issues with the wet weather at the start . Fixed by better grounding and Petronex ignition .
I have now been in some good heavy rain without missing a beat with fully open scoops ( no foam shoved down the scoop )

I run the open scoops on my 68. I kept my closed ones and bought the open ones.

Inside, I kept the stock air cleaner base, but added an aftermarket 14 inch top. This opens the element all around right under the scoops. I have no hood insulation and the next step is to fab up a pan to connect the hood to the air cleaner.
