dynamat
Im going to replace the headliner and carpet in my 67' GTO. Im considering putting dynamat in. Is this stuff worth the cost? If i do these ill eventually do the door kits and everything else as i go. So is this stuff worth it?

Someone else here posted about using a product from Lowes or Home Depot. I think it was called "Peel and Seal". It cost way less then Dynamat. I am going to look at it when the time comes.

Lowes has Frost King. A friend just did his '67 hardtop with it, and it worked very well. Sound and heat insulation. Far superior to the old tar paper. It was $20 per roll, and it took about 2 rolls to do the floor, I think.....

Someone told me Dynamat is overkill. I'm using a reproduction of the original. A little rumble like the original owners had is ok. Want quiet, buy a 2011 buick.

I used Dynamat and am very happy with it. I am also running 3 inch exhaust and it is not loud in the car at all. Its quiet enough to hear my wife talking. Now that I think of it, maybe go with the stock tar paper ;)

Peel & Seal, 36"x50' roll is $90. Stuff works just as good and a LOT LESS! Less heat inside the car and basically kills droning...

I did my 68 RS/SS conv. Camaro with DynaMat, then my 68 Firebird with Peel & Seal. No difference other than you can do two entire cars for a third of what it would take to do it with DynaMat. NO advantage at all IMO to the DynaMat!

About the only thing peel and stick is good for is sound deadening. It actually absorbs and transfers heat right on up through. Run your car with out the carpet in and peel and stick on the floor. The foil will get so hot from the exhaust, you almost cant touch it.
I use Thermotec exclusively here at the shop. It is a jute pad with string reinforced foil on both sides. It actually reflects the heat down instead of absorbing it. It is about 3/16" thick and comes in a 4' x 6' roll. 2 rolls will do an entire car at a cost of about $65 roll. I use 3M super spray adhesive to install. |
Oh well, I guess people can experience two oppposite results. As I stated before, I had two "f"-bodies, one done with DynaMat and one with Peel & Seal. Both worked equally as well only Peel & Seal was MUCH less expensive. In my 68 Firebird the Peel & Seal reduced the heat inside the car by at least half. And no, it never got hot to the touch and I was running a 400 that was putting 405hp to the rear wheels and the car was driven daily here in the FL heat etc.

Joe, how easy is it to take the Peel&Seal out if you need to? Can you get it off the floor easlily, or is it ruined if you have to remove it?
I've got a couple of things to fix later on for the floor. But I'd like to use something to quiet things down now and do them later. |
Well, let's put it this way. You CAN remove it, but it aint easy. LOL Now it could have been due to the fact that when I did mine, I had jsut POR15'd the entire floor and let it cure for a few days. Then I put the Peel & Seal down. I needed to pull up one of the pieces as it was going off on an angle. It came off but it didn't like it! LOL I will say one thing, it is definately STICKY! However, better than having it slide around and or not stay in place etc.
The biggest advantage to the Peel & Seal is the sound proofing. I had MASSIVE droning in my 68 Bird. Put the Peel & Seal in place and bang, NOTHING! You would have thought I had changed the muffler system. In addition, you could then place the original style sound deadener over the Peel & Seal and that would make it even more quite inside the car. I simply placed the carpet right over the Peel & Seal. Being a former contractor the Peel & Seal was the first thing I thought of when I did the 68 Bird. I had never used the product before when I owned the 68 Camaro, otherwise I would have used it on that car as well. |
Sounds good Joe. I guess can always use it in the rear seat area for now and add it for the front section later on. Front driver's side floor pan issues that need fixin is the reason.

Hmmmm i'm interested in Peel and Seal. Dynamat is ALOT of $$. I think to do an entire car would run a guy $1000 as opposed to maybe 200-300 for Peel and Seal.
Strange that one guy would say that it keeps heat out and another would say it transfers it in.....Are you guys sure you're talking about the exact same stuff? |

i used dynamat extreame on my floor and headliner and under the dash i know its expensive, to do what i did was almost 500$ but on these cars what isn't? would i do it again? yep, jd grim

I used DynaMat extreme on the front floors and trans tunell, and regular DynaMat on the rest.
Probably one of the best things I did to my car - cut the interior noise and heat WAY down. I would opt to spend the extra $$$ for DynaMat, as it is designed for heat and noise control. The roofing product is designed for roofs.....:D |
I just did the floor in my 65 with FatMat. Just like Dynamat but alot cheaper. Got a 50sqft roll off Ebay for $70. Did the entire passenger compartment and still had some left over.

Hmmm did you guys use the Dynomat and peel & seal with the tar paper or did you totaly replace it? I just bought new tar paper and was going to use it in addition to another insulation.

I did not re-install the original sound deadener. However, If I did it again I would. Why not? Install it right over the Peel & Seal product...
