462 SD 272cfm 48s, need header,

I am finally getting this thing together. I just sent the 5140 USA forged crank and billet rods to Whitmore to get fit in the splayed billet cap 400 block.
It will have Ross FTs, 4.25 65 pound crank, PPR Ultralight billets, Crower .688-.688. .272-.276 roller.
And the heads are 48s CNC ported by SD, 70cc so I should have around 12-1 CR.
Warrior intake , HP 1000 or 1050 Dom.
I think I can make 630-650 HP but I only have 3 tube headers. The end ones are 1 3/4 and the center is 2"
But I do have one new driver side Hooker SC 1 3/4 header. I am trying to find a passenger side 1 3/4 four tube header. It can even be from a different maker, I do not care.
Or a deal on a used set of headers.
Have any of you guys made good power with 3 tube headers?
Also, any recommendations on head gaskets with factory head bolts.
I could go Cometic but I do not want to spend the extra cash.

You'll be fine for a while using blue felpro's the race versions, i highly recomend Studs but you already know that, Your 3 tubes should get you by just fine i don't think it will care all that much to tell you the truth LOL, easily over 600hp, Those heads are really good, plus it would be cool to see what it would run with 3 tubes JMO

It's hard to beat Fel-Pro 1016 gaskets for your type of application. Did Dan tell you when you can expect to get the stuff back?

Calvin, it seems you know about Dans time lines. He said 3 weeks and I am going to hold him to it. The caps are fit except for the final line hone and the deck job.
The only thing that will hold me back is if the crank needs to go .010-.010.
But I will leave that up to him. One thing I know is he will not let a engine go out of his shop unless he feels good about it.
It could be one of the last engines he does so I am lucky to tell you the truth.
Its going to be interesting to see if the SD CNC 48s at 12-1 or the Dan Whitmore ported HOs at 9.3-1 go faster. The HOs will have the better exhaust with the 2" Hooker SCs.
I will do the test and let you guys know.
Will it be the CR or Dans portwork and good headers.
Dans RAIVs have beat some E WPs so it will be kind of fun.

Calvin must know Dan pretty well. :D

BTDT with my #96 heads... :old:

LOL

But his work is really nice as far as I am concerned.

Dan has always been known to do good work in the WI/IL area. It's getting stuff back in a timely manner that has effected his reputation.

I understand how things can go, I've had customers tell me no rush on something, but that is the last thing you ever want to tell an engine builder or machine shop. Also, it's aways less expensive to take a bit more time and do it right then cut corners and slap things together. Other guys tell me they can "knock out" a valve job in about 4 hours, I tell myself I must me doing something wrong as it takes me twice as long and I have the latest technology available.

Disagree on 3 vs 4 tube. Especially at that power level.
Spend'n all that $ on engine???, dont skimp on hedders.
Go big.

Cometics are over kill unless spray'n.

Local fella proved ~10 years ago that 3-tube headers would help his 66 428 GTO get into the 11's. It did.

Hooker Super Comps when you can. I wouldnt waste time with anything smaller until you can get BIG primaries.

Dragncar 02-22-2011 08:41 PM

Not sure if its worth spending the cash on some nice headers if I am going to take the 48s off midway in the season and put the HOs on with 2" headers back on.
I need to put 400-500$ into the HOs to freshen them back up.
Just using the 48s because they are ready to run.
