What's with the 390 horsepower rating?

single 4 bbl.I almost bought the car from gov. Shaffer.The car started life as a HO car and was converted by engineering.I could have bought it for 38K.Tom

So, the 390 horse was not a Super Duty, right. I would have thought that a Pikes Peak car would have been very simialar to a NASCAR race car that ran at somewhere like Riverside. The Super Duty NASCAR motors were rated at 405 HP. Also, I'm supprised they would have used the 8 lugs on a Pikes Peak car, something else that was never used on the NASCAR race cars because of the stress involved.

Looks real nice but shouldn't that intake be painted engine color?

the single 4 was rated 390.The car was changed in engineering to a SD engine and alu parts.Very documented story.The car has had great history,just not ome of the "true" SD cars.I believe the HT SD cars had sedan frames and this car did not as I remember.Tom

I'm still confused about the 390 HP rating, 1962 & 1963 Pontiac engines that were used in NASCAR were single four barrel SD motors rated at 405 HP. I often wondered about this, wasn't the 2x4 drag race motor also rated at 405 or were they rated higher. I was never much of a drag racing fan but I worked on one of the independant NASCAR teams during this time frame and I remember our car having 405 HP on the hood. Actually we used the same motors up thru 1965.
Another item on the Pikes Peak car that doesn't look correct is the air breather, it has a breather that looks like the one on a '64 single 4 GTO, our race car had a big breather much like a tri-power breather except it didn't have the snorkles, it had square holes around the back side.

Im sure the NASCAR air cleaner was diff from a street SD engine.Remember,this was a made up car.Tom

Thanks for the explanation, I don't know but that was the horsepower rating that NASCAR approved and it was used by all of the Pontiac teams during 62 & 63. The '61's were rated at 368 HP.
