Starter Won't Turn
 

Here are the specs.
1979 TA 4 speed.
I have installed a new starter, battery, and the cables look good. It was starting and running just fine and then at the paint shop it just won't turn over.
All lights and gauges work. The voltmeter shows a load when I hit the key, but nothing turns.
The battery is charged, so my next step was going to be the ingnition switch on the column. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The first thing i would do is hit the starter with a hammer a few times, I have done it many times and it works old school, Hit it not tap it OK, let me know if that does it.

Measure the voltage at the starter when the key is turned. Maybe a bad starter or a high resistance in the cable circuit.:)

That's what happened to my starter.... the old one. Had to be rebuilt. And... new starters can be bad too. Take it back, there should be a quarrantee on it if you haven't had it that long.

Suggestion.... DO NOT by one from Auto Zone. Just like their wiper motors, their starters are probably no good right out of the box. I've been down that road with them before. NAPA is the place to go.

Check for corrosion in the + battery cable.

I also installed a 2 gauge wire from the battery to the starter and that made a big difference in starting... for the better.

check all the connections. You may try jumping directly from the battery Pos to the solenoid S post. If the connections are good jumping to the S post will engage the starter and make it spin if it is a good starter. Be sure to take the necessary safety precautions if you do this as it may start and run you over if in gear.

I appreciate the comments. The new starter is from AZ so I will take that into consideration, as the old one is from one of my GTO's and was funtioning fine when removed. It sounds like from the advice I have received that working with the leads and battery cables will be my next step.

Don, if there is a warranty on the AZ starter take it back, and get your money refunded, before it runs out. Then get one at NAPA. PepBoys and AZ usually have only a 90 day warranty where NAPA will be for 12 months.

I won't swear to it but I'm pretty sure the AZ starter is no good. If you happen to have a spare have it rebuilt. You could take the AZ starter to NAPA and use it as a core to get another one, if you no longer have a warranty on it. And save your shims to reuse if you have any in now.
