MUNCIE-4 SPD HURST SHIFTER UPGRADE FOR DRAG RACING?

I HAVE A 69 FIREBIRD 455 WITH A MIUNCIE 4 SPEED,I WANT TO RACE MY CAR FOR FUN ONCE IN A WHILE AT THE 1/8 TRACK, HAS ANY OF YOU GUYS MODIFY OR UPGRADE THE RODS TO MAKE THEM SHIFT BETTER WITHOUT FLEXING THEM...I PLAN TO KEEP THE STOCK ORIGINAL SHIFTER, HOW ABOUT CHANGING TO STEEL BUHINGS....ANY IMPUT WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED---JOE

GOAT WHORE 09-17-2011 10:02 PM

The shift rods from a 70 are much thicker and less flexible the prior years.

69FIREBIRD76MM 09-17-2011 10:05 PM

GOAT WHORE--LOL...THEY FIT WITH NO ISSUES?...

GOAT WHORE 09-17-2011 10:08 PM

I believe so.
Someone else chime in to confirm.

I THINK THE GUYS THAT RUN PURE STOCK DRAGS..WITH THOSE STICKSHIFT FIREBIRDS AND GOATS CAN PROBABLY TELL ME HOW THEY DO IT....

GOAT WHORE 09-17-2011 10:18 PM

I am sure a lot of them just run stock linkage. I row the crap out ofine with no problems but I have 70 linkage.

Steel bushings hold up better than the nylon ones and I always lube mine with white lithium grease on both ends.

How do you expect to keep the Muncie together after the 2-to-3 Upshift?

Are you running an OHC-6?

I don't know what power level you're running but with spray I put about 525 to the back tires. I upgraded my munchie by adding the Autogear case and iron midplate and M22W gears (after I shattered the factory case and 1st gear). Then I welded some small angle iron to the shifter rods becuase they were flexing and I'd get stuck in 2nd gear which sucked.

After these mod's it took the abuse I threw at it.

Dude, dump the all caps.
No one like being yelled at the whole time.
It makes for a bad read.

MOTOR IS A 455 , 060 OVERBORED, #96 HEADS PORTED MATCHED TO RA IV GASKETS, CROWER HYD CAMSHAFT, #60211, 12 BOLT WITH 3.55 GEARS, MUNCIE M20, NEW CLUTCH AND REBUID TRANS, THINKING OF RUNNING 255-60-15 DRAG RADIALS, NOT SURE OF THE HORSE POWER THIS THING IS MAKING....BUT I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO SHIFT THE MUNCIE AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE...

JoePapa 09-19-2011 10:21 AM

Wow, that was the cam from my first build - she rumbled nicely with that.

69FIREBIRD76MM 09-19-2011 01:34 PM

JOE PAPA---YES IT IS A PRETTY NICE SOUNDING CAMSHAFT FOR MY STICK CAR , IT PULLS PRETTY GOOD TOO, THE PROBLEM IF I REV THE MOTOR HIGH, THE 2ND GEAR WONT ENGAGE, SO I THINK FONNA TRY TO FINE TUNE WITH STEEL BUSHINGS, AND MAY BE DO SOMETHINK LIKE YOU DID....IF NOT THERE IS ALWAYS TH400 WAITING...LOL

JoePapa 09-19-2011 02:03 PM

If you can't get it to go into 2nd gear at RPM then maybe your clutch adjustment is wrong or your syncro's arn't grabbing properly. Are you running synthetic or regular gear oil?

69FIREBIRD76MM 09-19-2011 05:55 PM

JOE PAPA----THE TRANS WAS REBUILD..HAS LESS THAN A MILE ON IT...I THINK THE PROBLEM CAN BE THE NYLON BUSHINGS IT HAS, SO I AM GOING TP BUY A NEW SET OF BRONZE--STEEL BUSHINGS, SEE IF THAT WILL HELP...THANKS FOR YOUR IMPUT BRO-->>>JOE

69FIREBIRD76MM 09-19-2011 05:57 PM

JOE-PAPA.....I FILLED THE TRANNY UP WITH REGULAR GEAR OIL IF I RECALL---DO YOU RECOMMEND SYNTHETIC??
