Msd pro Billet Distributor caps
Has anyone had a problem with the distributor caps getting
corrosion on the inside terminals? |
mine always look like crap, i also had the washers on the rotor split into about 6 pieces.
|
Yea,well mine gets a skip to it in the higher
RPMs, then I can clean it and scrape The corrosion then it's runs great. Didn't know if there was a cure or not. |
Yeah, happens all the time...
Yesterday mine developed a slight miss when I was warming the car before time runs. I cleaned it with 600 grit sandpaper. After doing that, on the first time-pass it ran like a raped ape. The car ran awesome all night, made 9 passes in all, two time runs and seven eliminator rounds... The MSD reluctor will corrode and the cap & rotor will show arc wear, 600 grit works on both... After having to clean the cap several time, I'll replace the cap & rotor, and start over... |
John, my first cap and all of the internals of the distributor had surface corrosion. MSD has added a vent to the top of the new caps. Don't know if this helps as I haven't had my cap off this year.

terminal corrision
yea just think of it as normal maintaince. I check my terminal about once a month specially with the humidity we get here in the midwest. I've started carring a a spare or 2 in trailer so i can just swap them out if i feel a need and clean it after rounds are done. keep them in vac. sealed bags. Can get them at grocery store with a little hand vacuum pump work great.. For parts and Meat!!!!

Thanks George, both of mine have the
Vents, but still gets corroded on them. Hey Axle Chuck and I are going to SGMP On Saturday for the Havok race you and George ought to check it out on their website. |
You can put a touch of dielectric silicone on them and the tip of the rotor and it will help. Just dont gob it on there.
|
Looks like a good event John, have fun and good luck...
Tell Chuck, and your Dad I said hello... |
I went back to the MSD caps because they are vented. Didn't cure the corrosion issue though. Last time I cleaned mine was before Norwalk, started to act up again so she be getting some attention this week. I sprayed a light coat of WD-40 on the distributor internals, then wiped down any excess.

If you have room - the large cap with the cap-adapt system works better

Sure.

I just drill an extra vent hole has worked fine for the race car but i would not do this on a street car.

I was having problems with mine as well msd sells a adapt a cap for the pro billet that lets you run a ford cap.I had no further problems after the swap.
|
Every cap be it any Bran MSD OR stock HEI ive drilled at least 3 holes into the cap between terminals, i never had any corrosion at all so far, ok start out with a pilot hole 1/4 inch and go to 3/8, i would not be afraid to put 4 or 5 holes in the cap. Before anybody asks me yes around perimter or o.d. of cap not on top!!

Todays High voltage ignitions + humidity + inclosed non vented area = corrosion.
I used to drill a small hole in the side of the cap. Was recommended back in the day by MSD & Accel. |
