Turn signal steering column switch
 

I have a 67 gto that just came out of storage. The steering column switch for the turn signal is broken and needs replacing. I understand it is difficult. Does anyone have instructions or is there a repair shop in the Wilmington, De area that does this type of work.

Well define "Broken".

Is it the arm that goes into the turn switch?

Does it still work, but you have to "HOLD" it up or down?

Does it not cancel when going around corners?

Doesn't work at all?


I ask, because if it has to be help or does not cancel, they are relatively easy. Just remove the steering wheel and replace either cam. If it is the other two, that gets a little harder as the entire assembly, with the wiring might need to come out.

Can you elaborate.

I took the steering wheel off and the plastic ring is broken where the arm screws into it. I think it and the wiring has to be replaced. How do I replace it?

Ronald, one way to tell if the wiring is bad, is if the turn signal lights are actually messing up. If not, save this headache for another day and just replace the cam.

yes that is it and it is broken so the arm does not move it correctly.

Just replace that part then. Might as well do the horn contacts too. Avoid the switch replacement if you can. Remember to line up the cancel cam with the slot on the steering shaft.

can I replace the plastic part without doing the entire harnes

Anyone have a photo of how the horn contact setup goes in correctly. And the correct length of the metal plunger.

Not to steal the thread but i have this same problem. my turnsugnals work and my turnsignal lever works but it does not cancel ut when turning a corner.

Yes. And you might even be able to get it at the local parts store as this was a comon piece up till the 80's.

What if you have this one? 67 GTO auto, column shift.

The brake lights don't work unless you pull or push on the signal lever.

When you signal the blinkers don't blink. The back lights do come on but don't blink. The front turn lights don't come on at all, and BOTH instrument panel indicators come on.

I believe this is 1 of 4 different switches that they used in 67, and that this one isn't available any more. Am I right?

If the lights come on in the back and not the front,replace the front bulbs and maybe flasher if that dosn't work.I would also replace the signal switch.Good luck,Tim.

I got it in and all is working. BUT I am loosing my mind. Forgot how the spring goes on the steering shaft. I have the turn signal mechanism installed then do I put the large spring on the shaft then the horn contact ring or do I put the horn ring on first then the spring?

I did the switch replacement but noticed that my turn signal shaft is pointed down about 5 or 10 degrees off level. I am looking for an adjustment and only see a shim in the mounting bolt close to the firewall. I have moved it around but it does not do much. Is there an internal adjustment behind the turn switch mechanism on the steering column?

If it is a tilt column you have place spring in then sit the cancel cam on top.
If non tilt column cancel cam then spring.

both the emergency button and the turn signal lever are both 5 to 10 degrees off in the same direction. so it looks like the column or internals are in need of rotation. or call me 302-293-6005

look at the picture in post 12 below. see how level the signal and emergency button are. Well mine are both off 5 degrees in the same direction

I'm pretty sure I know exactly what the problem is.
It has to do with the round metal piece, with all the notches and bent over tabs, (that the 3 long screws actually screw into), that goes inside the back piece housing. When you slide it in, its about 5 degrees to the left, but then gets rotated clockwise so the top screw hole is straight up. You might not have rotated it before attaching the top piece with the signal switch in it.
You might just need to loosen those 3 screws and rotate both front and back outer housing pieces together as one, then re-tighten the screws. assuming its back far enough so the tabs fall into place.
