1967 Grand Prix Choke Stat Question
My 67 GP has a 67 quadrajet intake and a 70 GTO quadrajet carb. Will a 70 choke stat be compatable with what I have?
If not, can anyone point me in the right direction? I would like to have a working choke. |
On my 67 428 GP, I have the factory intake and a '70 quadrajet. I use the 70 choke setup and it works great.

Thanks Alan. That was the info that I was looking for.
I was told that the 70 stat would not work. |
Well, I wasn't thinking and bought a 67 unit, and went to install it and discovered that it clearly was wrong. Realized I had a 70 carb and got one for a 70 and it works great.

The reason it was wrong if you ordered it for a 67 GP is they had Carter AFBs from the factory, GPs had Q Jets in 68, GTOs had Q Jets beginning in 67.

Pretty sure 428 GP's were Q-jets. Regardless of what model your 67 Q-jet intake came from, use the metal plates with the base gaskets, or tap and cap the small exhaust crossover on the carb mounting surface. 67 Q-jet intakes are unique, and problematic, in this regard.

400s had AFBs in 67 and all the ones I worked on must have had 400s. I honestly don't know if 428s did or not as I guess I never had the occasion to work on one. I honestly didn't catch the 428 part in the post and the original poster (stevep) doesn't differentiate his engine.
Upon researching the subject the 428s did have Q Jets, sorry I missed the reference in the second posters (perryka) first post. Sorry for the confusion. |
I ordered it for a 67 Quadrajet, but since it is a 1970 carb, it is not really compatable.
I did use the metal plates. |

And I worked at a Pontiac dealership in 1969 and have seen as well as worked on quite a few Pontiac 400s of that era and pulled more than a couple engines from 67 wrecks as well.
If you had a 67 Bonneville with a 400 automatic standard engine from my past experience I can say with certainty it didn't come from Pontiac with a Q Jet. I would say it was a 428, or someone had switched engine from another year, or perhaps intakes and carburetor. Or if it was a late in the year car and had a 68 engine in it and Pontiac had depleted their 67 engines. Pontiac motor division has built exceptions to the rule for sure but for the bulk of 400 B cars with 400s any I have seen were AFB equipped. HO 400s may have had Q Jets, but I have not seen a B body 400 HO car so I can't say anything about them, not even sure there was such a car. http://www.retro-motive.com/servlet/Detail?no=80 And further proof look at the listings for 1967 400s in cars other than GTO and Firebird:http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Kpontiac2.htm The 326s HO engine was also equipped with an AFB, this was the year Pontiac was changing over to Quadrajets on the V8s and some applications had Quadrajets and others had AFBs. The AFBs were on the bread and butter 400s in the full size cars. As has already been pointed out the 428s in full size cars has Q Jets as well as the Sprint 6 had Q Jets starting in 1966. The F bodies and A bodies also came with Quadrajets with 400s. I hope this straightens out the confusion, when I posted the first time I didn't anticipate starting a controversy and hopefully the facts posted straighten out the confusion of what 67s were equipped with what carbs, just sayin..........................:) |
I didn't differentiate my engine but I do have the original 400 that I converted to a Quadrajet many years ago and didn't think to add that info. I knew what I was talking about but I guess that I should have given more info, but I thought that I had all the bases covered in the 1st post.
Appreciate your interest Brad. |
Sirrotica....I apologize....I guess you are right. The 67 Bonne was my dad's last car he bought brand new (dealer demo/program unit). I was only 13 at the time and I inherited it after he passed away a few years later but I did not drive it for several years after that until I "grew up" a bit. It must have had an AFB or else it was a Rochester 2bbl car. I could have swore that it was a Q-jet but I was young and stupid and have only improved somewhat since then! :(
I checked Pete McCarthy's "bible" on the Pontiac engines and it confirms what you said in your previous post. It does show very nicely that all the 428's came with the Q-jet. It's on page 42 of my edition of the book. I am very sure our car was not a 428, so you are right about the carb. The only way that we could have had a Q-jet is if the dealer changed it over during the "demo/program" car stage and I doubt that happened. Thanks! |
