3 Drive Shaft Questions

1) Will a drive shaft that came out of a Saginaw fit a Muncie? I have a drive shaft that was used with the old Saginaw I have replaced with a Muncie and I am wondering if the output shaft will be compatible?
2) The Muncie and Engine sit +/- 1 inch further back (towards the rear wheel) then the engine/transmission was previously. Will the +/-1 inch render the drive shaft unusable?
3) Assuming 1 and 2 indicate that the driveshaft can be used will a drive shaft that is stock (at least appears to be) hold up the abuse a modified 455 will give it.

I realize these are broad questions and I haven’t tried to fit it yet. Just wanted to see if I could get the answers here prior to crawling under the car.

I bought a 65 GTO that had a saginaw 4 speed in it and I went to a muncie and I do not remember having any issues with the driveshaft or the yoke but that was close to 15 years ago

Same changeover on my 72 . It slid right in no changes at all.

As inexpensive as it is to have a new one made, it's a ton of assurance. New yoke, new joints, balanced, think I paid $240 for my last one. (steel). And I could have shopped it. That was with 1350s too.

Pretty certain munchies use a th400 type slip yoke. New ones are like < $50. And most likely available locally too. Maybe call a driveshaft shop just to get an idea of total cost?

My Pontiac buddy has a 66 GTO with a saginaw as a spare. He used it when his muncie was broken. No driveshaft issues. The muncie I believe uses the turbo 400 and the turbo 350 yoke. Newer muncies have the larger output shaft which would mate up to the turbo 400 yoke. 72 muncie I know. I just built an M22 in a 72 case with the large output shaft and it mates up to my turbo 400 yoke and driveshaft. Hope this helps. Bill

on early firebird & A-bodys through '69, I believe factory HD toploader 3 spd had its own length driveshaft. A Turbo 400 driveshaft in '67-69 Bird or A-body will be 5/8" shorter than same bodystyle with factory 2 speed or an early Muncie 4speed.

The Saginaw, Super Turbine 2 speed & early Muncie 4 speed all shared the same spline output shaft & yoke. Late Muncie 4 speed (original use 71-74) used the medium length Turbo 400 yoke. There are at least 8 different GM factory useage Turbo 400 yokes not including aftermarket yokes which accept Spicer 1350 u-joints. Shortest turbo 4oo yokes were used in late '70's Sevilles, longest in factory early BBC pickups, '70 Camaro's, & '70 Formula-T/A's. There is even an oddball med length T400 yoke used in '65 & 66 big Buicks. splines are different as is u-joint design.

Drive shaft did fit. Hope it holds up to the abuse.

HD toploader used same lgth driveshaft just different splined yoke. Had the ford spline.
