best pontiac performance engine book?
 

Who makes the best pontiac engine building book I mean complete with bottom end specs strokes and so on? I see books for sale on line but I have been burned before when I cant see what it covers if I need carb info I will get a book on that if you get what I mean

NOt sure just what you're lookling for but a good start would Jim Hand's book on Pontiac's....

The book I'm writing about engine building

Well, I'm getting close on my book. I feel I have covered engine building from picking a good core to prep work to understanding how the machining processes are completed, and assembly. I still need to edit and insert pictures and finish the last chapter of final assembly.

My question to the board is this:
Is there something specific anyone would like to see explained in detail in an engine building book?

I think I have covered it pretty well but you know how it is, when you do something over and over everyday, it becomes second nature and sometimes we find ourselves thinking that certain things are common knowledge and I may forget to mention it. I feel I have included far more stuff than what you will find in your average "How to build and engine" book.

Please feel free to ask for anything engine related as I'm writing this book for other peoples benefit, not my own, so I feel it only right to ask input for what you would like to see or learn about.

sounds cool sounds like what Im looking for I would like it to tell what I need to do to keep my motor together for the way I like to drive it. diff levels would be nice to see and combos of strokes too. I have had my 400 done 3x and its knocking again less than 5000 miles I have done motors in the past myself with better luck than the shops I have done them with. I think alot of things have changed since some of those old books were written great for their time lots of new parts out there and diff fuel too

If it is a how to book with the most up to date info go with Rocky Rotellas!

You may not find one single book to answer all your questions. Books are cheap, you might want to read several books, even books that are not specific to pontiacs can give you good insight.

Not as much has changed as you would think. Use of the "old books" shouldn't result in "knocks" any more than a newer book would. :rolleyes:

Thats my point not all engines are the same

If you have that many problems, probably best to change machine shops?

One thing that may need to be remembered/known is that if it's a newer stroker crank, they need the right bearings if they have bigger radii on the crank journals.

Both Jim Hands book and Rocky's are an excellent start, Osterstocks HO books are an interesting read as is Angels and MCCarthy's.

I for one will certainly be looking forward to Pauls book

Tim Corcoran also brought up a good point about books on performance in general.

I enjoy Power Secrets by Smokey Yunick. Not Pontiac specific but a very good read.

Agree think you got the best covered there.

I have Hand's and Osterstocks HO books which are still available new for less than they want for used ones on ebay Like the HO books as they seems to be more detailed in performance mods and assembly. The full size port templates are great as well but.... Everything out there now is pretty well based on the old blocks and heads. Would like to see a book using the new parts, blocks & heads, and power adders that are available to us now.

No one book is going to do it all.

I think that the Hendrickson/Olsterstock (HO Racing) books started the process.

Then others added to the mix, with some mistakes, but at least they were right 99.999% of the time, LOL.

Then the "Modern" books came out: Cliff's Book, Jim's Book, Rocky's Book, and there will be other books.

Very hard to say the "best pontiac performance engine book".

All have moved the knowledge base ahead greatly, IMO. Collect everyone you can find, sort out the key information, and go from there.

Sick of such books & catalogs. My needs are:

A durable Torque-Spec sheet (been using the MOTORS page, back page of a HO Racing manual, and one of the popular PMD Books Tq spec pages, depending on which I find when needed.

A book on Head flow, with the simple equations put to Excel.
