Solid cam for a 461 stroker street car?
I am thinking about going with a HFT with a 284/296 duration. Actually this one

110 LSA cams are lopey and have a noticeable idle- a 112 LSA cam like PPR's TC-02 or the Crower 60243 might be a better choice if you want your 461 to idle a little smoother.

I dont think you really need a solid for your goals. A solid would really only benefit you if you are planning higher rpms.
Or just like the 'sound' of solids. |
sorry a bit of confusion on my part. I used the wrong wording, I meant solid as in a good cam like a solid performer (proven reliability).

The Tomahawk TC-02 is working great for me. If you don't mind a little valve train noise and are looking for max power from the cheaper HFT/SFT cams, don't discount the solid lifter cams. I think they have been unfairly dubbed high rpm cams by many. In every instance that I have gone from HFT to SFT, I have gone quicker, made more power everywhere, ESPECIALLY at lower rpms. I know, I know....goes against popular opinion, but that is what I have found. I have done it in SBC and Pontiac engines. Had a 383 stroker in a third gen with Trickflow heads and 224/224 HFT cam. Ran very good, slight lopey idle. Swapped to a 236/236 SFT over a weekend. Car idled so smooth, I thought for sure they sent the wrong cam. Car was an absolute beast at all rpms with the solid.

Good points Dave! I have had similar results.
An added dimension is that you can "tune" a solid by altering the valve lash. No matter WHAT cam you get, and how much research went into it, it may still want a little more/less lift/duration on either the intake or exhaust - you can tighten/loosen the lash on either to find EXACTLY where your motor makes the best power. On my current small block Ford stroker, I found over 15rwhp (at peak, closer to 25rwhp in the midrange) by altering the lash settings from the recommended starting points. I altered the intake much more than the exhaust, as well. Lee |
Good point as well Lee....I played around with lash a lot with the UD 271/279 solid I used to run. I would loosen it when I was doing some street driving. It would smooth out the idle quite a bit. Are you still out in the Baytown area? Lloyd mentioned something going on out there the 28th of this month. You gonna be there? Would love to see your new ride.

To stay on topic, yes, Blackbird should possibly consider a solid lifter cam :-)
Dave, I'm a bit further south, in Seabrook, now. I'm planning on being there on there on the 28th. I just picked the car up from the tranny shop yesterday, I lost 3rd & o.d. on the first pass , the last time I was at the track. I needed to be in 3rd at about 550', when 3rd blew - so I coasted to an 11.7 @84mph. I found out yesterday that my tranny crossmember BROKE! I will have to get one fabbed, so if I get that done I'll be there on the 28th... |
