Question on 9 inch Ford gear carriers/Detroit Lockers
I have a 31 spline Detroit soft locker up for sale. A local buyer is interested but he is asking what gear ratio range the carrier is made for. I always thought that the Ford 9 inch carriers covered all the gear ratios, not like GM having having certain carries for certain gear ratio ranges? He says they change at the 3:70/3:73 point to a different carrier flange base??? Can someone set me straight? Thanks guys. Mark L

Im holding a Mark Williams catalog in my hand. Not 1 of the 9" detroit lockers (28, 31, 35 spline), billet or nodular housings specify a gear range.
The dana 60 locker does specify 4 series gears only. |
I ran 3.0s to 4.56 on same center section. He's thinking of a dana 44 which changes carriers after 3.50

I also never read or heard of the 9 inch having a gear range. Which I always thought was a good selling point. I agree that he is probably thinking if another rearend set up.
Thanks guys for backing me up. Mark L |
I went from a 4.10 Road Race Gear to a 2.75 on a hard locker one time to take a long trip and it all worked fine after the set-up. I have seen Ford Gears from 2.75 to 6.50 marketed as all working on a base 9" unit.

Thanks Tom, I agree. I think he was thinking it was for something else. Probably had that "OH S#&T" moment because he never called me back. Mark L
