Third Brake Light mod
 

Just thought I'd share my latest mod I did today.

Since my car is going to be a daily driver, I wanted to add a third brake light to give the general public following it that little extra to keep them off of my bumper.

I used a super bright red LED strip I found on Ebay for the whopping sum of $2.
Procteded the LED's with tape and painted it black, then used couple of 4" strips of 3M black double sided tape. Stuck it to the plastic trim and tucked the wires behind the plastic strip that holds the headliner on and behind the sail panel and done.

Looks good. It's inconspicuous until you have to use it. That'll save your rear end.

Hopefully it will be more helpful than when our 68 Firebird was rear ended. Get this, when we were rear ended, there was a Sheriff's patrol car IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, WITH IT'S LIGHTS ON, ten feet from where we were sitting in our car when it was rear ended. The Sheriff himself was standing in the road, orange vest and two orange cones (one in each hand). All that and the nice little illegal still managed to rear end our 68 Firebird! So yes, I can understand why you would install this 3rd brake light!!!!!!!

Nice job on keeping it on the down low. Can you show a picture close up without the brakes on? I'm curious just how inconspicuous it its.

When I read the title of this thread I thought, Oh No, please don't do it !!, but after seeing it, or rather not seeing it, it looks good. Well Done.

Here is one made resting on the trunk before I finished running the wires. It only sticks down about 1/4".

Thought long and hard about how to build a housing for it, then the light bulb came on! :doh:
IF it was just black, I wouldn't NEED a housing, just good double sided sticky tape!!!!

I wish I found your post a bit sooner...but I took a different approach. After painting my housings chrome (from previous white), with good results, I decided to go with a deck mounted brake light rather than going under the headliner, I went under the package tray and into the trunk. Took me a while to learn that I needed to tap the brake switch for power so the lights wouldn't blink with turn signals:D

Forgot to mention for anyone that is interested, I got the light off ebay from a 2005 Chevy Aveo. The 2005 GTO one was too large and would have had to be ground or cut down 2 inches to fit between the back seat and window.

I'll post one tomorrow when the sun comes up. It's painted flat black to match the package tray.

I did a similar mod to my TR6 and mounted it to the lower side of the trunk luggage rack using aluminum trim I got from Lowes. For those that are interested in using something more self-contained, the roof mounted 3rd brake light from a 94- 01 Bazer/Jimmy works well and can rest on the rear package tray. While not quite the bargain as Charles' project, they can be had for ~$35 on the Bay.

Here are some over all pics. I'm pretty happy with the results, could use a new package tray though. I used painters tape to mark the location so I could make my holes to mount the screws. When I pulled the tape off, some of the painted cardboard came off with it.

Looks good Rick.... but it is larger than I thought it would be. Blends in pretty good.
