Headliner
 

Hi I just received my new headliner from ames . I have helped install 2 or 3 a lot of years ago. Can any one out there walk me through the install and give me pointers. I would for ever in your debt. Thanks Mike

i have read that its very important to let the materials lay unfolded somewhere for a while before getting started to remove wrinkles.

I just did this recently, and I can say this.

Make sure you have the bows cleaned really well and have them in their original positions.
Trim the bow listings to allow a little sideways movement.

Get your front to rear centers stretched and in position with medium binder clips. Then work the sides the same way. Do this all around before you start trimming.

I used black weatherstrip adhesive rather than spray glue for obvious reason.

Lots of tiring upside down work, but it came out really nice.

That turned out really nice Charles. For a while there I thought it was a picture of the warehouse at Office Depot.

Make sure you install the screws for the coat hooks, visors, dome lamp and any other items that you have up there. Once the headliner is up, you will use the screws that are there to locate where they go. Once I have the headliner pulled most of the way and looks good, i put these items back in before I put any of the windlace up so that if it shifts a little you can adjust for the additional pull.

Check out the last two issues of Auto Restorer magazine.The current issue covers installation of the fiberboard headliners,like the one in my T/A. The previous issue covers installation of the bow type. Sorry i can't give you the exact month of the issue as i'm out of town at the moment. I would guess January or February issue.I think the cover car is a plum purple Charger. very good installation tips and color photos. This is a great magazine that i have been collecting for years.

I just did one a year or so ago that came out real nice on my 68. What seemed to really help was i had about 30 of those clamps and bought contact cement at lowes.It is the stinking yellow stuff similar to super weatherstrip adhesive. you unscrew the lid and there is a round cotton swap on a stick. Started in the rear and moved foreward a couple inches per side , a little at a time. The key is quit when you get pissed, which you will, then come back later when you calm down. Took me 7 hours to do total, and looked nearly perfect. It is way more work than it appears. Good luck.

Not from personal experience, but a guy I know who does interiors for a living told me the secret weapon for headliners is a steamer. Apparently helps the material shrink a little and gets nice and taut.

Just got back from putting in a headliner in my friends 65 chevelle. Turned out great. I have some referances that I have used to learn how to do these. It is not that difficult, but you need to take your time. Took 3 hours for me and him to put up and that was with everythign already cleaned up and parts ready to go. Just had to hang it, stretch it, glue it and put on the windlace and trim.
