Can Am in a Movie?
 

Anyone seen the movie "House of Rising Sun" that came out last fall? I was at my buddy's garage getting oil changed yesterday and a guy came up and said he had just watched the move and a car like mine was in it. Is it really a Can Am or maybe a Grand Am?

I can't say for sure since I haven't seen the movie, and so I haven't seen all the cars that are in the movie. But, I watched the movie trailer for the film on youtube and there is a very brief scene shown that has a white car in it. It's hard to see exactly what it is, but it's not a Can Am or Grand Am. It looks like an 81 Grand Prix.

Saw the movie last night after kbar posted this at the ABodySite. It's not a Can Am - it's a 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 Aerocoupe in nice condition. There's also a battered late 80's red Firebird and a late 80's Grand Am.

All of the Aerocoupes were silver, 1118 produced in total, with 79 shipped to Canada. Rare car.

Not sure about the 79 shipped to Canada, but I do know they were also made in Canada. I hauled a few out of the GM plant in St. Therese, PQ back to the States. And I'm sure some were shipped out to Canadian dealers too.

My 86 2+2 Was a GM Brass Hat car that I bought new in California, It was made at St. Therese and had a small Canadian transportation sticker on the drivers door jam. :)

I know of two 2+2 Aero Coupes in Toronto area today. There were plenty of these back in 1986 in Toronto. Seemed like they were easier to spot than Monte Carlo SS. I remember one front and centre at our local Pontiac dealer. I don't know how many stayed in Canada but they were made at the Ste. Therese plant which really a suburb of Montreal. Cars that stayed in Canada had slight diffferences, no AIR system and KPH instead of MPH spedos for example.

How do you mistake the 86 GP 2+2 aerocoupe for a 77 Can Am?

This is what happens when non-car people strike up a conversation with car people. Why can't they just say "nice car" and leave it at that?

Oh come on! They are both not Red or Black, have 4 Square Headlights, have redish stripes somewere on the body, and both have arrow heads and no bowties. Must be the same car, how many cars like that did GM Make?

They're both two door coupe Pontiacs, with Rally II wheels and a rear spoiler - to a casual observer they'd be pretty similar. Like a Corvette and a Viper are simiilar. or like a Trans Am is the same thing as a Camaro. :^)

The "79" figure was a quote from a Aerocoupe website, who knows how accurate.

Hey Chief, a good rule of thumb for Canadian Car production is at most 1/10 of US. In this case that would work out to 112 cars max so that 79 figure is very plauaible.

I think 1973 GTO production is 4,806 and we know for certain that Oshawa built 231 so again within that 10% figure and in this case closer to 5%.
