Paint or powdercoat Rally wheels?
 

Just looking for input on whether to paint or powdercoat 15x7 Rally wheels ? Thanks ...

My call would be to stay with paint.....

Unless things have changed in the powder coating industry lately,MOST finishes leave an "orange peel" texture on the surface.

That would be OK for a truck or daily driver but not good for a show car.

That may be the correct color for Rally I wheels but it is neither of the colors for Rally II's.

After all of the effort I went through, I was very disappointed - but the wheels are now sealed and I can paint the face the two colors.

Man I hate to hear this! I can't say for sure it's the right shade for the Rally I's either. However, I do like the end results for mine.

I just had a set of mine painted with 2 pack poly....not correct colours, just picked a couple that looked close as my car isn't a "correct" resto....but I like how hey turned out.
Not sure that powdercoat would look as nice.

It's funny how much the RED pmd cap makes the wheel POP.

I'll bet if you lined up EVERY restored bird with Rally II's at the T/A Nats,no TWO would have identical paint on the wheels. JMO

I powder coated my rallyII's in chrome here at home. They look alot like cragars. That said, I would paint them. I've found that the powder doesn't get down into the seam in the wheel. Now I have some rust starting there.

Thats a point...I had a set of Ford 12 slot wheels powdercoated in factory silver/grey. They looked nice, but I noticed it didn't get into the seam between the centre and the rim nicely.
It probably would have looked better if I'd had the centres removed, powdercoated and refitted to new chrome rims or something.

I tried powder coating once. The coating got spots on it over time that I couldn't get out. Also, when powder coating you have no real opportunity to fill in imperfections. And then there is the fact that, as noted above, the powder doesn't get down into the crevice between the inner and outer wheel.... which eventually bleeds rust if they see any water.

My last couple I've taken in to have dip stripped than e-coated. Then I start the "bodywork" and paint them. No more powder for me...

Well its not sounding to good for my powder coated wheels! I guess time will tell. For now they look great!

Coming from someone who has restored many of these rims, I say paint. Note: Even with paint extra measures must be taken to ensure the seam is sealed. Also good to blow them dry with compressed air after washing.
