1967 GTO Barn Find
 

I guess this really isn't a technical question as much as it might be a story, but nonetheless, should be shared.

What follows below are the pictures of my 1967 GTO convertible barn find. I PHS'd the car before buying it, and it came with the following options:

Regimental Red Exterior
Red Interior
White top
bucket seats
m-20 4-speed
Rally Ones
3.55 Safe-T-Track (posi..)
power antenna
tilt
wood sports wheel
wood shift knob
door edge guards
electric clock

and a few more I am certain I can't recall as I haven't yet received my PHS packet (Jim gave me the info over the phone)

How could I forget to include that... Yes... Its an HO car.

Cool find. Looks pretty solid for the most part. That is a big guy in the last pic. Is that you? If so you may want to move the seat back a little. I'm 5'10" 270 lbs and I'm a little tight in my '66. These cars weren't built for us big guys.

Love the chrome slots. Of all the 'period correct' wheels you see these days, chrome slots aren't too popular.

You have got a nice project there. Are you going back stock?

I always wonder why a nicely optioned HO car like this wasn't ordered with rally gauges.

Nice and fairly rare as there were only 1591 HO convertibles made in 67!

Nice find! But somehow over the years the term 'barn find' has changed. Seems when the term was first coined, 'barn find' meant a car that was most likely original paint and with a good cleaning and polishing would make a very, very nice driver. (or even better) The car pictured is a great project car to me.

And yes, that is one BIG dude. I wouldn't want to get him mad at me!

and to think I thought "barn find" meant a car found in a barn... ;-) I guess I always have more to learn.

well.. the short story with the car is that the bigger gentleman pictured was the son-in-law of the previous owner, who passed on 4 months ago of Colon Cancer. The car had been in the garage for at least 15 years according to the son-in-law. Realistically 25-30 years according to his daughter. The car has 85,769 miles on the odometer. After some minor haggling on a price, we agreed to a date and pick up. I then became in possession of said beast.

My plans at this time are rather simple. After spending 2 days tinkering with it, My cousin ( the hippie looking guy) and I got the car running. Yes... running. I was actually kinda shocked the motor wasn't seized. Of course it took new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc etc and later a carb rebuild kit... but... it runs and even doesn't smoke...!! So, I am now in the market for some tires (redlines) for a set of Rally One's I have had sitting around for such a project. I also have a new top and will be installing that shortly. Finally, I have a few extra goodies that will be added to it: am/fm radio with reverb, put back the wood wheel, add rally gauges, and probably a console. The interior will be replaced and cleaned up where applicable. After that, I am going to run it up to a buddies body shop and we will cut and buff the old original lacquer as much as possible. Beyond that, I am going to drive the snot out of it.... and leave it alone as much as possible. I presently am trying to finish another car and this one will be slated after that one, maybe.. I do have a 72 trans am I need to finish as well.

speaking of which, anybody want those chrome slots, they say A f/x on the center cones...?

Lastly, the pictures of the son-in-law do not do him justice. I stand at 6'6" 230lbs, and he easily looked me in the eye (probably at 6'7") and had to be at least a nimble 650lbs. Yes, I said nimble.. he moved around quite easily and fairly agile for his size.

That is a great looking car! Make sure you post some pics of it throughout your cleanup. I'd love to see it all buffed out.

My 67 also sat for decades in my dads Garage but I was able to fire it up as well. Even with 20 year old points and 20 year old gas if you can believe it!! I couldn't really run it at that point though because all the fuel lines were rotted and it started dripping gas all over the place but MAN those things are pretty damn indestructible!

Makes more sense to me now. The bigger guy and yourself do not look old enough to have this car stored for a long, long time. It seemed like a car that was stored a long time due to the hooker header stickers and the wheels/tires. When you stated previous owner, I was having trouble figuring out which guy in the photo was old enough to own it for so long. I thought the hippie looking guy might have been the previous owner and maybe you got the photos out of order :D

Since your main focus is not to restore the car before driving it, then it sounds like a barn find to me. I agree completely with what you are doing to it. I tried that with mine, but we had issues matching the paint with the few spots that needed fixed, so the whole car ended up getting re-painted. I'll bet that paint will look pretty good when buffed out. Nice car regardless.
