need a later model GM key cut
 

01 Chevy truck
bought it as a insurance rebuilder without any keys.
Local dealer wont cut a key without showing the title or registration.
I wont be able to register until its fixed,inspected etc.
Title takes at least 2 wks to get from state.
Dealer wont accept any other paperwork I have,Power of Attorney,bill of sale from insurance company,etc.
I hate destroying the lock to get the wheels unlocked so the truck can be loaded on the transport.
Any ideas on how to have a key made?
I ll sign an affidavit if I need to.
Truck needs to be picked up by end of next week so I have no time to waste.

GM dealers are instructed to not make keys without proof of ownership, it would seem you have proof of ownership. If you have a bill of sale from ins company with VIN on it it should be good. I would call some other GM dealers and explain your situation and see if they will make a key with your current paperwork.

BTW you shouldn't have to destroy the lock just remove it, although I have not worked on a 01 GM car/truck, the older lock cylinders can be removed after taking the steering wheel and turn signal switch out. I have fixed columns in stolen and recovered cars and you really don't want to break anything in the column if you don't have to, real PITA to repair.

Go Jacks would work too if you can't get a key made and need to move the front end or a rollback truck with skates. Car dolly is another option if the rear axle is intact and rolls.

Ive called 3 dealers in area and all say title or registration
and nothing else. Yes BOS has my name and VIN but isnt
a sealed state document as dealers say is required.

You can't remove the transmission linkage under the car to shift it to neutral, or remove the driveshaft?

Yes all this is possible to do but truck is 100 miles away and transporter isnt going to do all this to get it off his rig.

I thought you were trying to transport it yourself, anyway if it's going on a roll back there are nylon of metal skates they place under the front wheels so it can be winched on and slide off without need for steering. Repo guys use them and most rollback operators have them.

If it's a trailer then your probably gonna need steering and a key or pull the lock cylinder out.

Most any wrecker driver would unhook the driveshaft anyway towing it that far to prevent transmission damage, with the front wheels off the ground no need for steering. Wrecker drivers are pretty accustomed to removing driveshafts during tows in RWD vehicles, part of the job.

That's my suggestions for moving it without a key because GM is the only one that can look up the records to get the key code, to my knowledge locksmiths can make a key if the cylinder is out of the column but that's as good as they can do. You might wanna call one to be sure, but I don't think there's a way without the code.

Ive called locksmiths
they need cylinder out which requires the key to be inserted.
truck will be loaded on a portable parking lot with a loader,so no problem until its off loaded.

Call a GOOD local locksmith!

Even IF he had to replace the key cylinder it could be done on the spot!

......... I don't think a 01 has the "transponder" security key.

My 84 Z-28 had no keys and a local guy had a set of keys made in 30 minutes
for $75 bucks!

BTW: The key cylinder is not actually IN the column. Its sorta mounted on the
outside under the plastic cover and held in place by some weird "security screws".

If you have to turn the wheels just pull the screws out of the rag joint.

All these suggestions are good but not a solution to having a key made.
I wont be present when transporter drops off truck
and doubt he will want to go thru the trouble to "fix" it so that it can be unloaded.
Trying to coordinate a locksmith and a transport truck would be next to impossible.

Won't you be there when it's offloaded? You could do what it takes to get it unloaded if the hauler won't.

Can you take a door lock to the locksmith? Spare tire lock also if it has one?

Im 100 miles away from truck
If I could get there during business hours I would have it loaded on my own trailer and head home,
worry about getting a key made at my own pace,but right now this isnt possible.

You may be able to get the title in a few days, look for a "speedy" title service.

Gary, you seem like a good guy. I'm sure all will work out for you in the end. It's a karma thing.

If a roll off can back up to it the will just skid it onto the bed. Been there done that. Just need a plan to unload. Good Luck

Repo lot can make keys. Don't know if they'll give you trouble though. If it still has the original keys, they can run the VIN. Repo lot I worked for (years ago) had a key guy that got the proper keys for everything. Made our life a lot easier. PM me the VIN and I can talk to my buddy to see if he can get one made.

Unfortunately, no easy answer without a buddy at a dealership or one that has access to code information from VIN for this situation.

A "real" locksmith would have the tools to remove the cylinder from the column, as this design does need to turn to remove. Not an easy GM design to do. The door locks only contain 5 or 6 cuts of the 10 cut key.

Truck was loaded on my trailer and is home safe and sound.
Got the key code and went to dealer to have made.
Works just fine...
My son began removing bent parts earlier today so we can begin
to rebuild it.
