HD 8.2 rear in 6 cyl. 68 Firebird
 

My wife bought a 68 Firebird project last year. Sent for PHS documentation and it's an original standard 6 cyl. car with a manual column shift 3 speed and it has a 3.55 HD 8.2 rear with a 4 pinion Safe-T-track and the Nodular center section. It has the N on it. Thought this was a strange option for a 6 cyl. We are planning on putting in a 400 hp 400 and TH-400 tranny and was wondering if this rear will hold up to some occasional dragstrip runs? It also came with power steering and manual drums.

Nice!! I don't know which is rarer. A wife that buys a project car or finding a rare differential.

Thanks, guys! I've always worked on cars and admired older cars the most. I met my husband and he had a 68 GTO. I had no idea what the heck it was because I was into early Mustang fastbacks. Going to the Pontiac Nationals at Norwalk for 11 years; I fell in love with the early 67-68 firebirds. I finally decided I wanted a 68. We went to look at my firebird and believe me, it was rough!! My husband wasn't sure if we should get it and I said lets do it! I figured if he had a car, I needed one too! While he will help me fix it up and paint it; I want to be right in there with him and learn all the ins and outs of my car. Plus, with it being rough, I know what is bad and can replace it and also put on new performance parts as I go. I also don't expect my husband to pay for all the parts because it is my car. It is a slow process, but I am learning more every day! I know that I definitely will enjoy my car more because I will be a big part in making it whole again. I do not want to be like some other women/girls who have a older car and don't know anything about them or only know what their husbands/boyfriends/dads tell them about it. I don't want guys talking to my husband for info because "I don't know". In my opinion, if you own the car then you should know all about it. Oh, and I definitely am planning on taking it down the strip; I got to have a little fun too!

Awesome! Do you pictures as you have been working on it? One request, please do not throw away the OHC motor and transmission. Many parts on those are desirable from the motor mounts, accessory housing, pumps, distributor, cam tower, on and on. When you are ready to sell the parts please post them at the OHC parts for sale forum.

Marc, the original motor was not with the car when we picked it up. Their was a 350 small block chevy in it that the guy wanted to keep. He threw in a late 70s 400 bare block that was junk so that got scrapped. We got an early 70s 400 complete motor for a good deal from my husband's friend. We still have the 3 speed saginaw. I'm not quite sure what I want to do with it yet. I'm thinking of holding on to it at least for now. This firebird had the oddest options ordered for it. Besides what my husband wrote, it had the HO stripe package and the 400 hood and grill inserts. We have taken plenty of pictures of it and as we are tearing things apart. Not only to document the work but, to also help us put stuff back together. I'm thinking another year or two and I might make it to the Pontiac Nationals (with the car)!
