Help ID these two Poncho's for a Newbie.

Hello folks, Yes a newbie on the loose. The wife and I are looking for our next hotrod and found a pair of "GTO's" in a local mechanic shop. I think they are not true Goats but since I have never owned a GTO and am not up on all the insider tips and tricks I came to you guys.

Both cars have the same white out line GTO sticker on the rear quarter panel but both have been repainted so who knows what it started out in life as. Suspect car number one, I think it is a 72.(vin 2g37m2p141858 ) vinyl top, bucket seats, center counsel floor shifter,no hood scoops, 350 2v,power brakes wing on the trunk (original to that car? But it does look like it could be a GTO part to my untrained eye.)
Car number two, floor shifter, buckets, hood scoops (looks alot like the scoops for a 60's firebird) 4 wheel drum no power brakes, not sure what the heck is going on with the AC on this one but it is not stock for sure.(vin is 235370r116507). The 455 is what the guy tells me in in there has the nice 9 million pound factory intake, a coil on the fire wall is not hooked up but the HEI works good.there is what I think is the voltage regulator about above the distributer on the fire wall, with a hacked fuel system feeding a edelbrock carb with an open air filter. The big thing here is the all chrome front bumper. Hit me up guys. I don't care that they are not true GTO's but don't want to pay GTO prices for these cars plus all the body work they both need.

65-71 GTO , the VIN will always start out with 242.
So the 70 with chrome nose is not a GTO.
But sounds like it has a 68-70 GTO hood installed.

64 and 72 GTO was an option on the Lemans.
You'd have to buy the PHS packet most times to verify these.

But the 72 VIN's have an engine identity digit in VIN - and M is the 350 2bbl.
So the 72 is not a GTO either.
GTO came standard with no less than a 400 4bbl in 1972 (VIN code T)

In 72 , you could get a Lemans with the T-41 Endura front end option (same as GTO).
Could also get a Lemans with any V8 all the way up to 455HO (VIN code X)
These types are where 72's can get tricky without verifying by PHS.

Its a great time to get good deals on good driver type cars that are turn key.

If you're making a hot rod and you like the body style, I sayjust get it (or both).

BVZ the 66-71 GTOs came with their own vin of 242. 65 was still an option on the Lemans.

Ok, the guy has 3 GTO clones. The first one has holes in the floor boards and has rust all under the vinyl top and has a 350 in it it is a LeMans. The guy wants $5k for it and it is a 72. The next one is a 70 LeMans with holes in all the wrong places, it has the 455, he wants $7500 for it. The last one is a 68 400 4speed it is a GTO clone too. He wants just a simple $12k for a damn clone. Even if it does have the right bumper and grill.

Yeah, I knew that the moment he gave me his price list of the junk he has. If he was more in line with what they are worth then I might have gotten the welder out and ordered the patch panels.. Rewired the thing and built me up a motor to eat some pavement. The search goes on.
