Trim Tag Question
 

On a '68 GTO Trim Tag, there's a 16-M2 in the top right of the tag, above the 'BODY' text. Out of the '68 Trim Tags that I've looked at, I don't remember seeing text in that location. Anyone know what that would indicate?

Sounds like a tracking number for the gate/fixture use to weld up the body side in the assembly plant.

May have been a Pontiac plant thing - I don't have it on my Baltimore tag, but do have numbers there on one of my other 68 tags.

That's totally possible it's a Pontiac thing. My Framingham car doesn't have anything in that upper right area and checked with another '68 Framingham car and it's the same: nothing in that spot.

Based on the photo I stay with my original assessment: gate number for the fixture used in the body shop.

This certainly varies by assembly plant and is predominantly on Pontiac Michigan built cars.

Yes, you do -

-but those are different. Fremont cars, like yours, include the "manifest sequence number" (the build sequence of the car as it goes through General Assembly) in addition to the body sequence numbers. Most plants do not.

The other thing I noticed on several of the tags posted here is that the letter in the date code is much smaller than the numbers. My Pontiac built 68 is in storage right now so I can't check it, but I would swear the letter is the same height/font as the numbers. Anyone have thoughts on that?

I didn't notice that. The letter in my Freemont built car is the same size as the number.

Typically the month and week codes are the same size and font but I have seen them as posted here (week code smaller).

I don't think it means anything or that there is anything "suspect" about it.
