Stopping neighborhood barking dogs.
 

I have a large lot that has two homes that line the back property line (6' ft privacy fence). House to the left has one dog, rather mean, fiercely territorial and is occasionally annoying with his barking. Not a huge issue, most of the times we can deal.

But.....

The house on the right just changed owners. New owners have 2 dogs, one a German Sheppard mix that apparently is just as territorial as the dog on the left (the other is a yappy ankle-biter). They have a fence between them, which is a good thing because the way they are barking at one another, they would kill each other if they had the chance.

So, do those ultrasonic dog silencers work? Many are disguised as bird houses and emit a ultrasonic sound when a bark is sensed.

Any recommendations? Opinions? Options?

First thing, go over and meet the owners. Say hello, get to know them a little, and say hello to the dogs too before mentioning your concerns. A little politeness and familiarity can go a long way.

Not really the same thing, but one of my neighbors has a little tiny dog that can be a little yappy. However, I made friends with the dog, and if he's making a racket when I'm in the back yard I can say a few words and he'll knock it off.

Ive tried the birdhouse version at a distance of 25 to 50 feet or so with no obvious success. Ive also tried a handheld version at about 5 feet with a little dog and it made him turn tail and run. Larger dogs didn`t seem to care.

I want one that will output 1KW or so..........:-)

We've known the ones on the left for a while. Weird, delusional older people that think their dog is a cupcake. We haven't met the ones on the right yet, they just moved in last week.

Globs of peanut butter still works and they will be licking their chops too much to bark. Lol

Let me know if it works. I've talked with my neighbor when his dog is barking and after about 5 minutes he calls the dog in. When the dog gets to the door he gives it a doggie treat and says "good dog". The dog doesn't know if he got the rewards for barking or for coming in. I think that the dog is smarter than the owner.

its the owners that let the dogs bark. we have three bouviers and we are on them right away when they get to barking. i had to put up a privacy fence in the back corner of my yard that abuts the park. people seem to think its "cute" to bring their dogs to the corner of the park and let them see ours. our dogs going crazy as well as theirs. and they just stand there. really f-ing cute. fence took care of that have a friendly talk with the owners. hopefully they are responsible dog owners.

You could always shoot the dog in the head, as one PY member has done.

Feed the "yappy ankle-biter" to the German Shepherd. ;)

All joking aside, if you come up with a viable solution, PLEASE POST IT!

And I grew up with dogs. I like dogs. Its dog owners that are the issue :p

What about the summertime?

Bring your antifreeze around my house and you'll get a fatal dose of lead poisoning.

Summertime is best used with stun guns and tasers to ward off trolls with dogs.

Have couple garage/out door cats, so cant say anything.

The best way to cure a barking dog is to go and talk to the neighbor about it. If that does not work, become friends with the neighbor and feed both his wife and dog the green stuff.

...friend of mine had a problem many years ago with a neighbors unattended barking dog...when ever he worked in his garage the dog would bark at him non stop, he used a pellet gun and after a few lessons, the dog would quit barking and go in it's dog house anytime my friend came out to work in his garage ...the dog even obeyed his voice commands to be quiet

Having dogs on both sides of me I'm convinced that it's the owners and not really the dogs at fault. On one side 3 barking dogs that bark at anything and everything. On the other side he bought a 1 1/2 YO Brittany Spaniel for bird hunting. One week after he got it and not once has it been outside barking. It's been about 9 months and it's the nicest dog since his last one passed away. Definately the owners.

I agree it's the owners. But like I said, one set of owners are weird, older and delusional and think they have a cute little puppy, even as it's snarling, baring its teeth and trying to plow through their fence to rip me apart. The other set of owners I don't know yet. But the wife was going to make some brownies and go meet them soon, so we'll see.

But if I can set up one of these ultrasonic deterrents and have peace in my yard, I'll do it. I just know know if the damned things work or not. Online reviews are mixed. Some claim that they do not work on smaller dogs, but will work on the larger ones. If true, it's possibly a frequency issue.
