Rear window rust. 68 LeMans
 

My Lemans has the usual rust in the rear, lower corners of the back glass. The left side isn't too bad but the right side is almost gone. I have seen on Ebay someone sells patch sections for these common problems areas but I can no longer find them. Does anyone know who sells these patch sections for the rear lower corner area?

Would like to find same for a 66 Tempest as well, both front & back, if anyone knows.

I found that with the lower pieces, it wasn't too bad of a job to fabricate this area. some clean flat metal, vise grips, hammer, dolly, and a mig welder and you'd be surprised what you can do with some patience. irgoatmike

Thanks. I'm trying to avoid using a piece cut from another car. Frank's is a good place to get used parts, but expensive. I think I'll just try the fabrication route.

Sometimes to save on the fabrication time you can find the correct angle/size pieces at a hardware store or Lowes ,Homedepot. I've also visited a wrecking yard and cut out a section of any car that looked similar and was able to fit it in.

This really is an easy one to fabricate from scrap..Doesn't have to be from another car. All you really need is a little sheetmetal. I prefer scrap cut from other cars myself...but that's just me.
It's kind of hard to explain but you really just need to cut two strips of metal maybe one inch wide and the length and curvature needed. One piece is the horizontal piece...that needs to be cut to match the curve....and the other is the vertical piece...It will be bent to match the curve.
That is, the horizontal piece is cut to the curved shape of the corner. The vertical piece is bent to conform to the shape of corner. Weld the two pieces together and then weld them into place. Grind away the excess.
Actually, you can do this first with poster board, beer can, whatever. Once you get the proper dimensions figured out, cut the metal to the shape of the templates.
I hope I explained that clearly....here's a pic of mine that may help.
If you do this, make sure to check it against the shape of glass reveal moulding.

In the photo below, I cut the corner piece as a 'J' shape..that's what I'm referring to as the 'horizontal' piece. The other piece is welded to the 'J' in a perpendicular fashion after it has been shaped to conform to the window opening and insuring that the reveal moulding fits.

Are you going to do the welding repair yourself?? If not, shop around to a few local body shops, they have the tools and the good ones have the people who know how to use them. Time and effort put into a good repair save you from more repairs later. I'm a firm believer in doing it right the first time so there is no second time.

i found them last week and saved the auction. ad says he can make them as long as you need. in the past i have used scrape pieces as stated but these patches look nice.

Does PY have the pan behind the rear window?

Yeah, that's a pretty common trouble area. I can't imagine they wouldn't have it cuz.
