MS Office and Outlook help
 

I bought the student edition of MS Office 2010 when I bought this computer a little over a year ago. It was all we needed. It included a trial version of Outlook. Now, fast forward to today.

I need Outlook. I open Outlook and of course it tells me that the trial version is expired. I guess it came with the version of Office that we bought with the machine. My question is: can I just buy Outlook somewhere? On the MS website its asking me to buy Office Business when I already have all of those items. I don't need to buy Excel and Word again do i?

Paul, Microsoft never has never let anyone just purchase one individual item from their Office suite of apps in quite awhile. If you really have to have the Outlook client, you will have to purchase on of their Office 2010 suites. Here are some options --> http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/bu...102753654.aspx

If you do some googling, you may be able to find the home edition under $100. You do not have to purchase it from Microsoft directly, they are just offering you a quick download version of it.

Your best bet is to call Microsoft. Often times they will sell you one license and it is WAY cheaper than retail.

I installed Win 7 from a known good disc with a bad license. Knowing I would call and buy one. 1/2 of retail for the same software and they mailed me a disc for back-up.

If you do not want to spend the money, Mozilla Thunderbird is a KICK A$$ email client and it is free! I have used it for almost 5 years I think. Pretty much from debut. ZERO issues. Does everything Outlook does.

Does Thunderbird merge with Gmail? I dont know anything about Thunderbird. Is it desktop software like Outlook?

Paul, make MSN.com your homepage in IE. Then you can get a free Hotmail account. I know, Hotmail is supposed to change to Outlook. But so far I still have all of my Hotmail accounts.

I tried Outlook for 3 days and hated it. There is an Option tab that you can use to change Outlook back to Hotmail. That's how I got mine back.

Thanks Gary for the help but Im looking for something that will reside on my desktop for default email and that will merge all my accounts into one. The desktop version of Outlook does that very nicely but Im really against having to buy MS Office for a second time.

You can definitely buy individual MS Office programs (including Outlook) by themselves. They are just more expensive individually then when you buy one of the Office Suites.

With a little setup, any email client should be able to allow you to access your gmail account. Here is what Google Support says you need to do to setup your gmail in Thunderbird:

I would say, try Thunderbird. It's free, so if you don't like it, you can still order Outlook.
Microsoft also has Live Mail available for free. I've only used it once but it didn't seem any more or less complicated than any other mail client.

I just finished with Thunderbird and so far its VERY similar to Outlook (outlook being a little more refined being a MS product). Almost like a copy is you ask me. And its free so the price is right.

I have multiple email accounts that I monitor for the business and I just wanted it all on one screen. Thunderbird does it just the way I wanted. And with the new imaping that Google launched last year for Gmail, setting up each account took literally a minute.

Plus I needed a default email too so all is well.

Thunderbird is a great tool. I have 2 emails set-up with it. Not sure how many it will allow. The free option is the best!

The search function rocks in Thunderbird! Looking for an old email. just put one word and it will find anything! No calender, but that was not something that I used all that often with Outlook any way.

I never use the calender in my email. Thanks for the great suggestion. Ive had TBird up and running for a couple of days now with three different emails. Its perfect. I have to explore the add on sometime soon.
