Cutoff valve between fuel pump and carb?
 

A friend has an old car with a mechanical fuel pump with just 2 lines (inlet and outlet) and he wants to install a cutoff valve between fuel pump and carb so that he can run the fuel out before storing it. Question is whether this would work without damaging the fuel pump. Would this be bad for the carb?

Something along these lines would work. Just pinch the inlet hose to the pump until the car stalls. No need to have an ugly valve on his fuel line.

Always better to run the fuel out of the carb. Alternative is to let it evaporate out and leave deposits. The added shutoff valve is no different than the needle valve in the carb being shut off by the float and dead heading the pump. Mechanical pumps spend their running life under pressure. Actually their lever pushes up against a spring and the spring pushes down on the diaphragm and creates pressure. As the pump builds pressure the diaphragm and spring stay up and the arm basically cycles with no load.

So is it ok to run pump dry? There is a section of rubber hose right before the fuel pump that could be crimped off but not after the pump. It might be better to cut a section of the metal line out between the pump and the carb and put a section of rubber hose so that it can be crimped there, I would think having fuel to the pump would make it easier to start when he wants to start it up again.

As soon as you remove the pinch pliers you'll hear a "whoosh" as the fuel runs into the pump, so it wont be dry.

Thanks for the help, I think putting the section of rubber hose in and pinching it off is the best solution.
