Correct positioning of splitters on 79-81
Hard to get a good idea as any angle makes them look different. I have a side shot on one and looks like the rear of the bhack tip is even with the back edge of the side marker light.
Do they point straight down or angled out some. In some shots of cars looks like you can barely see the main pipe where the two split off. What is the closest? Putting splitters back on the 81 car while the rear was out. Cutting and splicing the mandrel bent Dynomax pipes. The PYPES adapters look liek they put their splitters too far back. The pictures I have of my 78 back when it still had srock tailpipes are all at angles and there looks like a slight difference due to the different rear bumper on the earlier cars also. |
Here's a pic. of an OEM application. I don't remember the angles. Out if any, just a little?

On my 76 with the PYPES adapter and splitter the back of the back pipe is under the back of the marker light.

Best Pics I have found that have measurements, not mine

when those cars were new, they came all different angles. my 76 had one almost pointed down and the other at an angle like the above pic. my 79 one side rubbed the quarter panel and the other one was about a couple of inches away at a different angle.

This was my 1980 Firebird Esprit; shot taken in mid 90's and the exhaust was stock.

Looks like they are pretty far back on the 79 and laters. The 78 and earlier looks a little further forward.

Not really. I think it's just the view in the pics. From the side view, you can see that the 79-81's are no different in location than earlier ones. Here are some very low mileage unrestored original 79's. From what I've seen on 79's, the end of the tips are usually aligned about 1/2 to 2/3 into the side marker:

My 78 has stock exhaust, and measures : My car in the picture
2.5" down from quarter to bottom of front pipe 3" down from quarter to bottom of back pipe 12" from front quarter to front pipe 11.5" from back pipe to bumper edge http://forums.performanceyears.com/f...entid=8287&d=0 |
Thanks for the measurements.

Ok guys here is the sectioned Walker mandrel tailpipe and a PYPES splitter. Had to shorten the splitter even using it on a PYPES adapter it would have been too long. What do you think on the placement? Eventually it will get a new system when I drop an extra 455 in it later this year. Just couldn't take the Wlakers under the bumper anymore and it was easy to cut off while the rear and springs were out. Even with the flash hard to see the black panels.
