Scrap or not scrap?
 

This picture is of a 1966 Bonneville 2.73 safe-t-track rear. I am considering extracting the gears and carrier and dumping this housing. I am concerned that it's too badly rusted / decayed to put into service. Plus, I have a very nice housing, currently containing a 2.56 open that I could use for the 2.73 gears and carrier. Thoughts?

pull the vent tube out and save that at least

The housings are plentiful. I would toss it as you say and keep the internals. That said, I have a 2.41 that I trip over b/c the thing is very nice and I have visions of 20 MPG with this and some unforeseen transmission.

Looks like it could need more epoxy to stop the weep leaks than it's worth. Save the internals.

The other side looks ok, but the one pictured (passenger side) looks very decayed. The spring perches would need some work too. I imagine it could be welded up, but it doesn't seem worth it, particularly when I've got a good housing in the bull pen. I just need to consolidate.

You can't see it, but in addition to the two Pontiac rears, I've got a Dana 60 rear from a 70 F250 right on the floor next to this one. The truck rear is in pretty good shape, but it's gotta go too. Hoping to find a home for it.
